Following the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is not simply about knowing his name, loving him or occasionally practising a few Sunnahs. For a Muslim, the Sunnah represents a practical example of how Islam is lived.

The Qur’an commands believers to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Allah says:

“Whoever obeys the Messenger has truly obeyed Allah.”
Qur’an 4:80

The Prophet ﷺ was sent not only to deliver the Qur’an but also to demonstrate how its guidance should be lived. His prayer, character, relationships, worship, patience, generosity, honesty and treatment of people all provide Muslims with an example to follow.

This is why the Sunnah occupies such an important place in Islam.

The word Sunnah refers broadly to the way, teachings, practices and example of the Prophet ﷺ. It includes much more than small habits that are sometimes presented on social media as “Sunnah.”

There are Sunnahs connected to worship, such as how the Prophet ﷺ prayed, fasted and performed Hajj. There are Sunnahs connected to personal conduct, such as showing mercy, speaking truthfully and treating people with kindness. There are also Sunnahs connected to everyday life.

Following the Sunnah therefore means allowing the Prophet’s example to influence the way we live.

One of the greatest mistakes is to reduce the Sunnah to outward appearances while ignoring character.

A person may know many Sunnahs concerning what to say or how to perform certain actions, yet struggle with honesty, anger, arrogance, backbiting or how he treats his family.

But the Prophet ﷺ was known for his exceptional character.

Allah Himself says:

“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”
Qur’an 68:4

His Sunnah therefore includes how he treated people when they disagreed with him, how he dealt with his family, how he behaved toward the poor, how he responded to insults and how he showed mercy.

Following the Sunnah should make a person’s character better.

The Prophet ﷺ also taught Muslims that consistency matters. A believer should not only remember the Sunnah when discussing religion publicly. The real test is what happens when nobody is watching.

Do you tell the truth when lying would benefit you?

Do you control your anger when someone provokes you?

Do you keep your promises?

Do you treat your spouse with kindness?

Do you forgive people?

Do you show mercy to those who have less than you?

These are not separate from following the Prophet ﷺ. They are part of it.

Another important point is that loving the Prophet ﷺ should lead to obedience.

Allah says:

“Say, [O Muhammad], ‘If you should love Allah, then follow me, so Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.’”
Qur’an 3:31

Love is therefore not merely an emotion. It has consequences. If we genuinely love the Messenger ﷺ, we should want to learn how he lived and try to follow his guidance according to our ability.

This does not mean that every Muslim will suddenly become perfect.

Following the Sunnah is a lifelong process.

You may begin with one practice, establish it, learn more and gradually incorporate other Sunnahs into your life. The important thing is that your knowledge should lead to action.

The Sunnah also teaches Muslims how to avoid making religion unnecessarily difficult. The Prophet ﷺ worshipped Allah deeply, but he also ate, slept, married, worked, travelled, spent time with his companions and interacted with society.

Islam is not about escaping ordinary life. It is about living ordinary life in a way that pleases Allah.

This is why learning the Sunnah properly matters.

A Muslim should be careful about attributing statements or practices to the Prophet ﷺ without evidence. Social media has made it extremely easy for people to share sayings labelled “Hadith” even when their authenticity is uncertain.

Before saying, “The Prophet ﷺ said…” it is important to verify the source.

Following the Sunnah begins with knowledge, but it should eventually become practice.

Learn how the Prophet ﷺ prayed, then improve your prayer.

Learn about his patience, then work on your patience.

Learn about his generosity, then become more generous.

Learn how he treated his family, then examine how you treat yours.

Learn how he spoke, then examine your own tongue.

The purpose of studying the Sunnah is not simply to collect religious information. It is to allow the example of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to shape our lives.

A Muslim does not follow the Prophet ﷺ only because he lived more than fourteen centuries ago. We follow him because Allah chose him as His Messenger and made his example a source of guidance for those who believe.

The more we learn about his life, the more clearly we can understand what it means to live Islam beyond words.

Following the Sunnah means bringing the Prophet’s guidance into the way we worship, speak, behave, work, love, forgive and deal with people.

That is where knowledge of the Sunnah becomes a living part of our faith.
