WHAT ARE YOU CARRYING INTO JUMUʿAH THAT YOU NEED TO LEAVE BEHIND?
Friday comes around every week, but we do not arrive at it as the same people. Every week brings something with it. Some weeks bring good news, answered prayers and moments of gratitude. Other weeks bring disappointment, arguments, financial pressure, exhaustion, temptation and mistakes we wish we could undo.
By the time Friday arrives, we may be carrying much more than the things in our hands.
We carry things in our hearts.
A disagreement we have not resolved. Anger toward someone. Regret over something we did. Anxiety about the future. Envy toward someone else’s life. Guilt over a sin we keep returning to. Sometimes we even carry disappointment with ourselves because we thought we would have become better Muslims by now.
But Friday gives us an opportunity to pause.
Before you sit down for Jumuʿah today, perhaps ask yourself: What am I carrying that I need to leave with Allah?
SOME BURDENS ARE INVISIBLE
Not every burden looks like a problem.
You can go to work, smile at people, answer your phone and continue with your responsibilities while carrying something heavy inside.
Nobody may know that you are struggling with forgiveness. Nobody may know that you are disappointed. Nobody may know that you have been fighting a private temptation or questioning whether your duʿas will ever be answered.
Allah knows.
That alone should give a believer comfort.
Allah says, “We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than his jugular vein.” Qur’an 50:16.
You do not have to explain everything perfectly to Allah before turning to Him. He already knows what is happening inside you.
LEAVE THE GRUDGE BEHIND
Perhaps one of the things you need to leave behind this Friday is resentment.
Someone hurt you, and you have been replaying the situation repeatedly. Every time you remember what happened, the anger returns.
There are situations where justice matters and where a person may legitimately need to protect themselves from further harm. Forgiveness does not mean pretending wrongdoing did not happen.
But carrying hatred indefinitely can become another kind of burden.
Allah praises those who restrain their anger and pardon people, and He reminds believers that Allah loves those who do good. Qur’an 3:134.
Maybe forgiveness will not happen instantly. Maybe you need time.
But you can begin by asking Allah to remove bitterness from your heart.
LEAVE THE GUILT BEHIND
Another burden is guilt.
Perhaps you made a mistake this week. Perhaps you committed a sin that you promised yourself you would stop. Perhaps you disappointed someone. Perhaps you feel like you have fallen too far away from Allah.
Do not allow your mistake to convince you that you should stay away from Allah.
The Qur’an gives believers a powerful reminder:
“Do not despair of the mercy of Allah.” Qur’an 39:53.
Tawbah means returning.
You do not need to become perfect before returning to Allah. You return because you need Him.
If you have sinned, repent. If you have fallen, get back up. If you have neglected your worship, begin again.
Do not let shame become an excuse for distance from the One whose mercy you need.
LEAVE COMPARISON BEHIND
Maybe your burden is not anger or guilt.
Maybe it is comparison.
You look at someone’s marriage, career, business, children, home, appearance or achievements and wonder why your life does not look like theirs.
Social media can make this even more difficult because we are constantly exposed to carefully selected versions of other people’s lives.
But Allah did not create every person with the same journey.
Someone else’s blessing is not evidence that Allah has forgotten you.
Someone else’s success does not cancel your own potential.
And someone else’s timeline is not the timetable Allah has written for you.
This Friday, perhaps you need to leave comparison behind and return to gratitude for what Allah has actually placed in your own life.
LEAVE THE NEED TO CONTROL EVERYTHING
There are things you can change.
There are also things you cannot control.
You can make effort, but you cannot control every outcome. You can make duʿa, but you cannot dictate exactly how Allah will answer it. You can treat people well, but you cannot control how they treat you.
Sometimes peace begins when we understand the difference.
Do your part.
Ask Allah for what you need.
Take the lawful means available to you.
Then trust Allah with what lies beyond your control.
That does not mean becoming passive. Tawakkul is not abandoning effort. It is making the effort while recognising that the final outcome belongs to Allah.
LEAVE THE WEEK’S DISTRACTIONS BEHIND
Perhaps you have spent the entire week running.
Work.
Traffic.
Family responsibilities.
Messages.
Bills.
Social media.
Appointments.
Problems.
By Friday, you may be physically present in the mosque but mentally still somewhere else.
Jumuʿah can be your opportunity to stop.
Put the phone away. Quiet your mind. Listen to the khutbah. Remember Allah. Pray.
Give yourself permission to step away from the noise for a moment.
The world will still be waiting when you finish.
But you may return to it with a different heart.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO TAKE EVERYTHING INTO NEXT WEEK
One of the beautiful things about a weekly rhythm is that it gives us regular opportunities to reflect.
You do not have to carry every mistake from this week into the next one.
You do not have to carry every argument.
You do not have to carry every disappointment.
You do not have to carry every fear.
Some things need action. Some need apology. Some need patience. Some need boundaries. Some need professional or practical help.
And some things simply need to be handed over to Allah after you have done what is within your ability.
So before this Friday passes, look inward.
What has been occupying too much space in your heart?
What have you been carrying that Allah is asking you to surrender?
What do you need to repent from?
Who do you need to forgive?
What do you need to stop comparing?
What do you need to stop worrying about?
And what do you need to place in Allah’s hands?
You may walk into Jumuʿah carrying the weight of the entire week.
Try not to walk out carrying all of it.
Turn to Allah sincerely.
Make duʿa.
Seek forgiveness.
Listen to the reminder.
Pray with presence.
And leave behind whatever is keeping your heart further from Allah.
May Allah lighten the burdens we carry, forgive our sins, purify our hearts and give us the strength to face the coming week with greater iman and patience. Ameen.
Jumuʿah Mubarak from 3SixtyIslam.
