ISLAM EXPLAINED: WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE IN ISLAM?
And I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me." — Qur'an 51:56
INTRODUCTION
One of the deepest questions every human being eventually asks is:
“Why am I here?”
People spend years pursuing education, careers, wealth, relationships, and personal achievements, yet many still search for a deeper sense of meaning and purpose.
Islam provides a clear answer to this question.
According to Islam, human life is not a random journey without direction. Every person has been created with a purpose, and that purpose is to know Allah, worship Him, live according to His guidance, and prepare for the eternal life that comes after this world.
Understanding the purpose of life changes how a Muslim views success, hardship, wealth, relationships, and even death.
Life is not simply about what we achieve. It is about our relationship with the One who created us.
WHY WERE WE CREATED?
Allah clearly explains the purpose of human creation:
“And I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”
— Qur’an 51:56
At first glance, some may understand worship only as prayer, fasting, and other religious rituals.
However, worship in Islam is much broader.
Worship means living in a way that pleases Allah.
It includes:
- Performing Salah
- Being honest
- Showing kindness
- Respecting parents
- Earning halal income
- Helping others
- Seeking knowledge
- Maintaining good character
- Being grateful for Allah’s blessings
A Muslim’s entire life can become an act of worship when it is done with the right intention.
WORSHIP IS NOT BECAUSE ALLAH NEEDS US
A common misunderstanding is thinking that Allah created humans because He needs their worship.
Islam teaches the opposite.
Allah is completely independent of His creation.
Allah says:
“O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.”
— Qur’an 35:15
Allah does not benefit from our prayers, fasting, or obedience.
Rather, we benefit from worshipping Allah.
Just as the body needs food and water, the soul needs connection with its Creator.
Worship gives the heart purpose, direction, and peace.
LIFE IS A TEST, NOT THE FINAL DESTINATION
Many people judge life only by comfort and success.
They believe happiness comes from having more wealth, more achievements, or more worldly possessions.
Islam teaches that this world is temporary.
Allah says:
“Know that the life of this world is only play, amusement, adornment, boasting among yourselves, and competition in increase of wealth and children.”
— Qur’an 57:20
This does not mean Islam rejects worldly success.
Muslims are encouraged to work, build, contribute, and seek lawful prosperity.
But the problem begins when the world becomes the ultimate goal.
A believer uses this life as a means to achieve something greater: the pleasure of Allah and success in the Hereafter.
THE PURPOSE OF LIFE IS TO KNOW ALLAH
One of the greatest purposes of human existence is developing a relationship with Allah.
Islam does not present Allah as a distant Creator who has no connection with His creation.
Allah invites people to know Him through:
- His names and attributes
- His signs in creation
- His revelation
- Acts of worship
- Reflection and gratitude
When a person knows Allah, they understand:
- Where they came from
- Why they exist
- Where they are going
This knowledge gives life meaning.
THE WORLD IS A PLACE OF RESPONSIBILITY
Islam teaches that human beings have been given a special role on earth.
Allah says:
“Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.”
— Qur’an 2:30
Humans have been given:
- Intelligence
- Choice
- Responsibility
- The ability to distinguish right from wrong
This means we are not simply consumers on earth.
We are responsible for how we treat:
- Our bodies
- Our families
- Our communities
- The environment
- The blessings Allah has given us
A meaningful life is one where a person uses their abilities in a way that benefits themselves and others.
SUCCESS IN ISLAM IS DIFFERENT FROM WORLDLY SUCCESS
The world often defines success through:
- Wealth
- Fame
- Power
- Status
- Achievements
Islam teaches that the greatest success is something deeper.
Allah says:
“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your full compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So whoever is removed from the Fire and admitted into Paradise has attained success.”
— Qur’an 3:185
A person may have little wealth but be successful in the sight of Allah.
A person may have great worldly achievements but fail if they neglect their relationship with their Creator.
True success is measured by the condition of the soul.
HOW DOES A MUSLIM LIVE WITH PURPOSE?
1. BY WORSHIPPING ALLAH SINCERELY
The foundation of purpose begins with recognising Allah as the One worthy of worship.
Salah, fasting, dua, and remembrance keep the heart connected to its Creator.
2. BY SEEKING BENEFICIAL KNOWLEDGE
Islam encourages Muslims to learn.
Knowledge helps believers understand:
- Their faith
- Their responsibilities
- Their purpose
- How to make better choices
A person who seeks knowledge is constantly growing closer to Allah.
3. BY SERVING OTHERS
Islam teaches that faith should produce positive impact.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The most beloved of people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to people.”
Helping others, showing kindness, and making life easier for people are all ways of fulfilling our purpose.
4. BY USING WORLDLY BLESSINGS RESPONSIBLY
Money, skills, education, and opportunities are blessings from Allah.
The question is not only:
“What do I have?”
The believer asks:
“How can I use what Allah has given me in a way that pleases Him?”
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE LOSE SIGHT OF THEIR PURPOSE?
When people forget Allah, they often search for fulfilment in temporary things.
They may chase:
- Wealth without contentment
- Success without peace
- Pleasure without meaning
- Recognition without happiness
Islam teaches that the heart will always search for its Creator.
True peace comes when a person aligns their life with the purpose Allah created them for.
Allah says:
“Unquestionably, in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest.”
— Qur’an 13:28
THE ROLE OF DEATH IN UNDERSTANDING LIFE
Islam teaches that death is not the end.
It is a transition from this temporary world to the eternal Hereafter.
Remembering death helps Muslims prioritise what truly matters.
It reminds us:
- Wealth stays behind
- Status disappears
- Achievements are temporary
- Only our deeds accompany us
The wise person prepares for the meeting with Allah.
LESSONS WE CAN TAKE AWAY
The purpose of life is not simply to exist.
It is not only to accumulate wealth, build a career, or achieve recognition.
The purpose of life is to:
- Know Allah
- Worship Allah
- Develop good character
- Benefit creation
- Prepare for the Hereafter
When a person understands this purpose, every part of life gains meaning.
Work becomes worship.
Family becomes a responsibility.
Challenges become lessons.
Blessings become reasons for gratitude.
CONCLUSION
Islam teaches that every human being has a purpose.
We were not created without direction. We were created by Allah, for Allah, and our ultimate return is to Him.
The greatest question is not:
“How much have I achieved?”
The greater question is:
“Am I living in a way that fulfils the purpose Allah created me for?”
A meaningful life begins when the heart recognises its Creator and chooses to walk towards Him.
May Allah guide us to live lives filled with purpose, sincerity, and obedience, and may He make us among those who return to Him with hearts that are pleased and accepted. Ameen.
