THE THREE HOURS OF JUMU’AH EVERY MUSLIM SHOULD VALUE
Every Friday brings with it a special opportunity that comes only once a week. Jumu’ah is not merely a day for attending the congregational prayer; it is a day filled with blessings, mercy, and countless opportunities to draw closer to Allah.
Many Muslims prepare for Jumu’ah by wearing their best clothes and heading to the mosque, but there are three important periods on this blessed day that deserve special attention. If we value these moments and spend them wisely, our Fridays can become more rewarding spiritually.
1. THE HOURS BEFORE LEAVING FOR JUMU’AH
The preparation for Jumu’ah begins long before the adhan is called. This is the time to purify ourselves physically and spiritually.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged Muslims to perform ghusl, wear clean clothes, apply perfume (for men), and use the siwak before attending Jumu’ah. These acts are not simply matters of appearance; they reflect respect for one of the greatest weekly gatherings in Islam.
It is also recommended to recite Surah Al-Kahf during the day. Authentic narrations mention that whoever recites it on Friday will be granted light until the next Friday.
This is also an excellent time to increase in remembrance of Allah, seek forgiveness, and make sincere intention to benefit from the khutbah.
Instead of rushing at the last minute, aim to prepare early. A calm heart receives reminders better than one distracted by haste.
2. THE MOMENTS DURING THE KHUTBAH
Once the imam begins delivering the khutbah, our attention should be entirely focused.
The khutbah is not a time for conversations, checking phones, replying to messages, or distracting others. The Prophet ﷺ taught that even telling someone to remain quiet during the khutbah diminishes one’s reward because it itself becomes unnecessary speech.
Listening attentively allows the reminders from the Qur’an and Sunnah to penetrate our hearts. Every khutbah is an opportunity to learn, reflect, and renew our commitment to Allah.
Many of the problems Muslims face today whether personal, family-related, or societal can often be addressed by sincerely acting upon the guidance we hear every Friday.
3. THE LAST HOUR BEFORE MAGHRIB
Among the greatest gifts of Friday is the special hour during which Allah accepts supplications.
The Prophet ﷺ informed us that there is a period on Friday when a Muslim asks Allah for something good and it will be granted. Many scholars hold the opinion that this blessed time is the last hour before Maghrib.
Rather than allowing this period to pass in distraction, dedicate it to heartfelt du’a.
Pray for forgiveness.
Pray for steadfastness upon Islam.
Pray for your parents, spouse, children, relatives, and friends.
Pray for the oppressed Muslims across the world.
Pray for those who are ill.
Pray for those seeking halal sustenance.
Pray for those hoping to perform Hajj and Umrah.
Pray for Allah to grant our Ummah unity, peace, and guidance.
No sincere du’a is ever wasted. Allah either grants it, delays it for a better time, or replaces it with something even better.
MAKE EVERY HOUR OF FRIDAY COUNT
Friday comes only once every week, and none of us knows whether we will witness another one.
Value the hours before Jumu’ah by preparing well.
Value the khutbah by listening with full attention.
Value the last hour before Maghrib by filling it with sincere du’a.
If every Muslim treated these three moments as precious opportunities rather than ordinary parts of the day, our Fridays would become a powerful source of spiritual renewal.
May Allah accept our Jumu’ah, forgive our shortcomings, answer our supplications, and keep our hearts firm upon His religion. Ameen.
