RAMADAN DAY 22: DEEDS THAT MATTER MOST IN THE LAST TEN NIGHTS

By the time Ramadan reaches Day 22, the most valuable part of the month has begun. The last ten nights carry immense spiritual weight because one of them contains Laylatul Qadr, a night better than a thousand months.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” (97:3)

This means that a single night of sincere worship can carry more reward than decades of ordinary effort. Because the exact night is hidden, believers are encouraged to increase their acts of worship throughout the entire final stretch of Ramadan.

But what deeds matter most during these nights?

Night prayer (Qiyam al-Layl)

One of the most emphasized acts of worship during the last ten nights is night prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would spend long portions of the night standing in prayer when these nights arrived.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever stands in prayer on Laylatul Qadr with faith and seeking reward will have all his previous sins forgiven.”

This narration is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari.

Even a few sincere units of prayer done with concentration can carry enormous reward.

Recitation of the Qur’an

Ramadan is the month of the Qur’an. Increasing recitation during the final nights strengthens the heart and deepens reflection.

Reading with understanding, even if the amount is small, can have a powerful spiritual effect. These nights are moments when the heart is more receptive and the reward is multiplied.

Making sincere du’a

The last ten nights are among the best times to ask Allah for anything. The believer should use these moments to ask for forgiveness, guidance, provision, and success in this life and the next.

One of the most recommended supplications was taught by the Prophet ﷺ to Aisha when she asked what to say if she found Laylatul Qadr:

Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa‘fu ‘anni.

Meaning: O Allah, You are Most Forgiving and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.

Repeating this du’a frequently is highly recommended during these nights.

Giving charity

Charity during Ramadan already carries multiplied reward, but charity during the last ten nights carries even greater value.

Helping someone in need, feeding a fasting person, or supporting a charitable cause can become one of the deeds that weighs heavily on the scale on the Day of Judgment.

Even small acts of generosity can become enormous when done during these blessed nights.

Seeking forgiveness (Istighfar)

No matter how much good a person does, everyone needs Allah’s forgiveness. Repeating Astaghfirullah with sincerity purifies the heart and wipes away sins.

These nights are an opportunity to return to Allah sincerely and seek a new beginning.

Consistency matters more than quantity

Some people feel overwhelmed and think they must perform long hours of worship every night. But what matters most is sincerity and consistency.

A few acts done regularly with focus are more valuable than many acts done without presence of heart. The goal is to remain connected to Allah throughout these nights.

A chance that comes once a year

Ramadan passes quickly. Before we realize it, the final nights will be gone.

Day 22 reminds us that the opportunity is already here. Every night now may be the night that changes everything. The believer who understands the value of these moments does not delay. They increase their effort, renew their intention, and make the most of every hour.

May Allah allow us to witness Laylatul Qadr and accept all our deeds.
