KATSINA 50: MURIC CONDEMNS KILLING OF MUSLIMS, DEMANDS JUSTICE

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the killing of 50 Muslims during a prayer session inside their mosque in Malunfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State.

In a statement issued on Saturday, 23rd August 2025, and signed by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the faith-based organization described the incident as “gruesome, ferocious, inhuman and barbaric.”

According to reports, the attacks occurred across several communities in Gidan Adamu Mantau, Unguwar Yar Mai Dabo, Makera in Karfi ward, and Burdigau in Yaba ward between the night of Monday 4th August and the morning of Tuesday 5th August, 2025. Out of the 50 victims, 30 were killed inside the mosque while praying, while others were burnt alive in their homes.

MURIC questioned the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security apparatus in the region.

“MURIC calls on the security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army, to up their game in the northern region where insecurity is most visible. Momentary attacks on innocent civilians can be explained away, but not attacks that last the whole night. What happened to army outposts? How effective is intelligence gathering among the civilians in those villages? If the attacks were reprisals as reported, why was there no forward-looking defence strategy?”

The group also criticized Western nations, particularly the United States, for their silence over the killing of Muslims.

“We frown at Western countries, particularly the United States, who feverishly ululate at the killing of any single Nigerian Christian but conveniently go into dozing sessions when the victims are large numbers of innocent Muslim civilians. This selective activism only amplifies our belief in the absence of justice, equity and fair play in the global ecosystem. Muslim lives also matter.”

MURIC urged both local and international stakeholders to recognize the sanctity of Muslim lives and called for urgent action to prevent further bloodshed.
