WHY DOES ALLAH TEST PEOPLE?

You try your best, but things still go wrong.

You make du’a, but the situation does not change as quickly as you hoped.

You see other people moving forward while you seem to be struggling.

And you begin to wonder:

“Why is this happening to me?”

“Has Allah forgotten me?”

“Why do I have to go through this when I am trying to do the right thing?

These are difficult questions, especially when you are young and still trying to understand life.

The Qur’an reminds us that being tested is part of our journey.

Allah says:

> “Do people think they will be left alone because they say, ‘We believe,’ and will not be tested?”

> Qur’an 29:2 — translation of the meaning.

BEING TESTED DOES NOT MEAN ALLAH HAS ABANDONED YOU

Sometimes people assume that if they are doing well, Allah must be pleased with everything they do. They may also assume that if they are struggling, Allah must be angry with them.

But life is not that simple.

A person may experience hardship while remaining faithful to Allah. Another person may enjoy many blessings while being tested through those very blessings.

Hardship alone does not prove that Allah hates you, just as wealth and comfort alone do not prove that a person is better than everyone else.

The important question is how we respond to the circumstances Allah allows us to experience.

TESTS CAN REVEAL WHAT IS IN OUR HEARTS

When life becomes difficult, we may discover weaknesses we did not know we had.

Perhaps we become impatient.

Perhaps we stop making du’a because we feel disappointed.

Perhaps we become jealous of people whose lives seem easier.

Or perhaps the difficulty teaches us to be more sincere, patient, compassionate and dependent upon Allah.

This does not mean that every painful experience is easy to understand. Some hardships are deeply painful, and it is normal to need time, support and healing.

But we can still turn to Allah while we are trying to understand what we are going through.

HOW SHOULD A YOUNG MUSLIM RESPOND TO TESTS?

1. Keep turning to Allah.

Continue making du’a and observing your salah, even when you feel discouraged.

2. Be patient without pretending you are not hurting.

You can feel sad, cry and seek comfort while still trusting Allah.

3. Take practical steps.

If you are struggling academically, seek help. If you have a health concern, consult a healthcare professional. If you are facing a serious problem, speak to someone trustworthy.

4. Avoid comparing your test with someone else’s life.

You may not know the difficulties another person is facing privately.

5. Ask Allah for strength and guidance.

You do not need to understand every part of your journey before you turn to Him.

YOUR CURRENT SITUATION IS NOT YOUR WHOLE STORY

You may be experiencing a difficult season, but do not assume that your entire future will be the same.

Keep doing what is right. Learn from your experiences. Seek help when you need it. Continue asking Allah for ease and guidance.

HEART CHECK

Remember that patience does not mean you must remain silent about harm or refuse help. Seeking a solution is compatible with trusting Allah.

A test may challenge your heart, but let it also be an opportunity to turn towards Allah rather than away from Him.

May Allah ease the burdens of everyone going through difficulties, grant us beautiful patience, strengthen our iman and reward us for the good we strive to do. Ameen.
