You’re travelling.
You’re on a bus.
You’re at the airport.
You’re on a train.
You’re visiting another city.
Then the time for Salah arrives.
You may wonder:
“How am I supposed to pray?”
Being on a journey does not mean Salah disappears.
But Islam provides special concessions for travellers.
ISLAM MAKES THINGS EASIER FOR THE TRAVELLER
A genuine traveller may have certain concessions, including shortening some prayers.
This is known as Qasr.
The four-unit prayers—Dhuhr, Asr and Isha—may be shortened to two units when the conditions for travel are met.
Fajr remains two units, and Maghrib remains three.
WHAT ABOUT COMBINING PRAYERS?
A traveller may also have the concession of combining Dhuhr with Asr and Maghrib with Isha in circumstances recognised by Islamic law.
But the exact rules differ depending on the situation and scholarly school.
This is why it is useful to learn the Fiqh of travel before going on a journey.
WHAT IF I’M TRAVELLING BY BUS OR TRAIN?
Try to plan your journey around Salah.
If you can stop and pray properly, do so.
If you are on a train, plane or bus and the prayer time is going to end before you can reach a suitable place, ask a knowledgeable scholar about how to handle your specific situation.
The important thing is not to casually abandon the prayer simply because you’re travelling.
WHAT ABOUT THE QIBLAH?
When possible, face the Qiblah.
If you’re in a moving vehicle and cannot maintain the direction, the ruling can depend on the type of journey and circumstances.
Again, Islam recognises genuine difficulty.
PLAN BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
Before leaving home:
– Check the prayer times.
– Know approximately how long your journey will take.
– Carry a small prayer mat if useful.
– Identify possible places to pray.
– Learn the rules of Qasr and combining prayers.
– Ask a knowledgeable scholar about unusual travel situations.
HEART CHECK
Travelling is exciting, take pictures, explore new places, enjoy the journey.
But don’t leave Allah behind at the bus stop.
Wherever you go, Salah goes with you.
And Allah has made the religion practical enough to accommodate the genuine difficulties of travelling.
