Lessons from the Journey of Musa (AS) and Khidr
Have you ever prayed for something, but instead of getting what you wanted, everything seemed to go in the opposite direction?
You prayed for success, but you faced failure.
You prayed for a relationship to work, but it ended.
You planned your future carefully, but suddenly everything changed.
Sometimes, you may look at your life and ask, “Ya Allah, why is this happening to me?”
The story of Prophet Musa (AS) and Khidr teaches us something powerful: you may see only one part of the story, but Allah sees the entire picture.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
Allah mentions this remarkable story in Surah Al-Kahf.
Prophet Musa (AS) was told about a servant of Allah who had been given special knowledge by Allah. Musa (AS) wanted to learn from him, so he travelled to meet him.
When Musa (AS) finally found Khidr, he asked to accompany him so that he could learn from the knowledge Allah had given him.
Khidr warned him that he would not be able to remain patient with things he did not understand.
Musa (AS) promised that he would be patient but then the lessons began.
THE DAMAGED BOAT
During their journey, they boarded a boat belonging to some poor people.
Khidr damaged the boat.
Musa (AS) was shocked.
He asked why Khidr would damage a boat belonging to people who had kindly given them passage.
But Khidr knew something Musa (AS) did not know.
A king was seizing every good boat in the area. By making the boat appear defective, Khidr protected it from being taken.
What looked like damage was actually protection.
THE BOY
Later, Khidr encountered a young boy and killed him.
Musa (AS) was deeply disturbed and questioned the action.
Again, Musa (AS) could not understand why such a thing had happened.
Eventually, Khidr explained that the boy would have caused his believing parents great distress and hardship. Allah knew what Musa (AS) did not know, and Allah would replace their loss with something better.
This part of the story contains matters of the unseen that are not for us to imitate or judge by our own reasoning. Khidr was acting according to knowledge and instruction from Allah—not personal desire.
THE WALL
Finally, they entered a town where the people refused to offer them hospitality.
Yet Khidr repaired a wall that was about to collapse.
Musa (AS) wondered why he would help people who had refused to help them.
Khidr then explained that beneath the wall was a treasure belonging to two orphan boys. Their father had been righteous, and Allah wanted the treasure protected until they became old enough to retrieve it.
Again, something that seemed unnecessary had a beautiful wisdom behind it.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
You may not be a prophet travelling with Khidr, but the lessons from this story are deeply relevant to your life.
1. You don’t have to understand everything Allah is doing.
Sometimes, your unanswered dua may actually be protection.
Sometimes, a closed door may be Allah redirecting you.
Sometimes, a delay may be preparing you for something better.
You see today. Allah knows tomorrow.
2. Don’t judge your entire life from one difficult chapter.
The boat looked damaged.
The boy’s story looked tragic.
The wall looked like pointless work.
But Musa (AS) eventually learned the wisdom behind what he had seen.
Your current situation may not be the final chapter.
3. Seek knowledge with humility.
Musa (AS) was a great prophet, yet he was willing to travel and learn from another servant of Allah.
Being knowledgeable should never make us arrogant.
A young Muslim should be able to say:
“I don’t know. Teach me.”
4. Patience is part of learning.
Khidr told Musa (AS) that patience would be difficult.
Sometimes Allah is teaching us through experiences we don’t immediately understand.
Don’t rush to conclude that Allah has abandoned you simply because life is difficult.
5. Allah sees what you cannot see.
This is perhaps the greatest lesson.
You may be crying over the door Allah closed, while Allah knows what would have happened if it remained open.
You may be asking, “Why didn’t Allah give me this?”
And perhaps one day, you will understand why.
And even when you don’t understand, you can still trust the One who knows everything.
A MESSAGE TO EVERY YOUNG MUSLIM
Don’t let one bad experience make you lose hope in Allah.
Don’t let a failed relationship make you believe you will never find happiness.
Don’t let academic failure convince you that your future is finished.
Don’t let rejection make you think you are worthless.
Don’t let a delayed dua make you think Allah isn’t listening.
You are seeing a small part of your story.
Allah knows the whole story.
So keep praying.
Keep trying.
Keep learning.
Keep making dua.
And most importantly, keep trusting Allah. “And you do not know what Allah knows.” — Qur’an 2:216»
Sometimes, what you call a setback is protection.
Sometimes, what you call a delay is preparation.
Sometimes, what you call an ending is actually the beginning of something better.
