For many Muslim students, one of the biggest challenges is finding time and a suitable place to pray during school hours.
Classes are going on. Teachers are teaching. Friends are moving around. Sometimes there is no prayer room, and you may even feel shy about telling people that you need to pray.
But here is something every young Muslim should remember:
Your Salah is still important, even when you are at school.
Allah says: “Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at specified times.”
Qur’an 4:103»
Salah is not something we only observe when we are at home or in the mosque. It is an obligation that remains with us wherever we are, as long as we meet its conditions.
BUT WHAT IF THERE IS NO MOSQUE?
You don’t necessarily need a mosque to pray.
If the place is clean and suitable, you can pray there. Depending on your school environment, this could be a quiet corner, an empty classroom with permission, an office, or another clean place where you can perform your prayer privately.
You should also try to face the Qiblah as best as you reasonably can.
WHAT IF I AM AFRAID OF WHAT PEOPLE WILL SAY?
Sometimes the biggest obstacle isn’t the school—it’s embarrassment.
You may think: “People will laugh at me.”
“They will think I’m too religious.”
“What if my friends ask questions?”
Remember that your relationship with Allah is more important than people’s opinions.
You don’t have to make a public announcement every time you want to pray. Simply find a suitable place and fulfil your obligation.
Being young is not an excuse to abandon Salah.
WHAT ABOUT MISSING PRAYER BECAUSE OF CLASSES?
A student should plan ahead.
If you know that a prayer time will come during school hours, think about how you can pray on time. Speak respectfully with a teacher or school authority if necessary.
However, specific rulings about delaying, combining, or making up prayers depend on the circumstances and scholarly opinions. Don’t make a habit of simply allowing prayer to pass because school is busy.
DEAR YOUNG MUSLIM…
One day, school will end.
Your exams will finish.
Your classmates will move on.
Your uniform will be put away.
But your Salah will remain part of your record with Allah.
So don’t be ashamed of praying.
Be the student who studies for the exam of this world while preparing for the exam of the Hereafter.
Your education matters.
Your future matters.
But so does your Salah.
