ARE YOU USING YOUR TIME THE WAY ALLAH INTENDED?

Time is one of the greatest blessings Allah has given mankind. Every person is given the same twenty-four hours each day, yet what separates people is how they choose to spend those hours. Some use their time to draw closer to Allah, benefit others, and build a meaningful life. Others allow days, weeks, and even years to pass without making any real progress.

Islam teaches that time is a trust. It is not something to be wasted or taken for granted because once it passes, it can never be recovered.

Time Is a Blessing We Will Be Asked About

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ informed us that every person will be questioned about their life and how they spent it. This reminder should make every Muslim think carefully about how they use their days.

It is easy to account for money because we can see where it goes. Time is different. We often lose it without noticing.

Hours spent on meaningless conversations, endless scrolling, unnecessary arguments, and distractions can quickly add up. Before long, another week has passed with little to show for it.

Make Time for What Matters

One of the biggest mistakes people make is saying, “I don’t have time.”

The reality is that we make time for what we consider important.

If Salah is important, we will pray on time.

If learning the Qur’an is important, we will find a few minutes each day to read it.

If family is important, we will spend quality time with them.

If our relationship with Allah is truly our priority, our daily schedule will reflect it.

Balance Is Part of Islam

Islam does not ask us to spend every hour in the mosque. A Muslim is encouraged to worship Allah while also working, studying, caring for family, and contributing positively to society.

A balanced life includes:

  • Performing the five daily prayers on time.
  • Working honestly to earn halal income.
  • Spending time with family.
  • Seeking beneficial knowledge.
  • Looking after one’s health.
  • Helping others whenever possible.

When these areas are given proper attention, a Muslim lives a balanced and purposeful life.

Avoid the Trap of Constant Distraction

Technology has made many tasks easier, but it has also created new distractions. It is possible to spend hours online without gaining anything useful.

Before picking up your phone or opening another social media app, ask yourself:

  • Is this helping me?
  • Am I learning something beneficial?
  • Could I use this time more wisely?

You do not have to abandon technology. You simply need to use it with purpose instead of allowing it to control your day.

Plan Your Week

A productive Muslim does not leave everything to chance.

At the beginning of each week, set a few realistic goals.

For example:

  • Complete all five daily prayers on time.
  • Read a portion of the Qur’an every day.
  • Visit or call your parents.
  • Give charity, even if it is a small amount.
  • Learn one new Islamic lesson.
  • Help at least one person.

Simple goals provide direction and help ensure that your week is spent on what truly matters.

Don’t Delay Good Deeds

Many people postpone acts of worship because they think they will have more time later.

“I’ll memorise the Qur’an when work becomes less busy.”

“I’ll start attending Islamic classes next year.”

“I’ll become more committed after I retire.”

The problem is that no one knows how much time they have left.

A wise Muslim does not wait for the perfect moment. They begin with whatever opportunity Allah has given them today.

Make Every Day Count

Success is not measured by how busy you are but by how wisely you use the time Allah has entrusted to you.

Every prayer offered sincerely, every page of the Qur’an read, every act of kindness, and every honest day’s work is an investment that will benefit you long after this life has ended.

As you continue through this week, pay closer attention to how you spend your time. Remove what is unnecessary, increase what is beneficial, and make every day an opportunity to earn the pleasure of Allah.

May Allah bless our time, help us use it wisely, and make our days full of deeds that bring us closer to Him. Āmīn.
