MAKE THIS WEEKEND COUNT: DON’T TAKE A BREAK FROM ALLAH

For many people, the weekend is something to look forward to. It is a time to rest after a busy week, spend time with family, catch up with friends, or simply relax. Islam does not discourage rest. In fact, taking care of your body, mind, and family is part of living a balanced life.

However, there is a danger when the weekend becomes a break from our relationship with Allah.

Sadly, some Muslims are committed to worship on Friday but become careless as soon as Jumu’ah is over. The Qur’an is closed until next week, the masjid is forgotten, prayers are delayed, and time is consumed by endless entertainment. Before they realize it, another week has passed with little spiritual progress.

The believer should remember that Allah is the Lord of every day not just Friday.

LET JUMU’AH INSPIRE YOUR WEEKEND

A meaningful Jumu’ah should leave an impact that carries into Saturday and Sunday. The khutbah should inspire us to improve, not just inform us. The prayer should strengthen our resolve to obey Allah, not mark the end of our worship.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if they are small.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

Consistency is what transforms a person’s life. A small act of worship maintained every day is better than a large act performed once and abandoned.

FIVE WAYS TO HAVE A BLESSED WEEKEND

1. DON’T NEGLECT YOUR DAILY PRAYERS

No matter how busy your plans are, guard the five daily prayers. Weekend outings, shopping, weddings, or visits should never cause us to delay or miss salah.

The prayer remains our strongest connection with Allah.

2. SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY

The weekend is an opportunity to strengthen family ties.

Eat together.

Talk without distractions.

Read a short passage from the Qur’an.

Teach your children a hadith or a du’a.

Pray together whenever possible.

The strongest families are those that remember Allah together.

3. GIVE YOUR HEART SOME TIME WITH THE QUR’AN

Even if you recited Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, don’t let your Qur’an remain closed for the rest of the weekend.

Read a few pages.

Reflect on their meanings.

Allow the words of Allah to shape your thoughts before the new week begins.

4. DO SOMETHING GOOD FOR SOMEONE ELSE

Weekends often provide more free time than weekdays.

Use part of that time to:

  • Visit your parents or relatives.
  • Check on a neighbour.
  • Help someone in need.
  • Give charity.
  • Visit someone who is sick.
  • Encourage a friend who is struggling.

Good deeds are among the best ways to earn Allah’s pleasure.

5. PREPARE YOUR HEART FOR THE NEW WEEK

Before Sunday comes to an end, take a few moments to reflect.

Ask yourself:

  • Did I become closer to Allah this week?
  • Which sin do I need to leave behind?
  • Which good habit can I continue next week?
  • Have I sought Allah’s forgiveness?
  • Am I ready to meet Allah if tonight were my last night?

A believer constantly evaluates themselves before they are called to account.

A WEEKEND THAT BENEFITS BOTH WORLDS

There is nothing wrong with enjoying halal recreation, travelling, spending time outdoors, or sharing joyful moments with loved ones. Islam encourages balance.

But let your enjoyment never make you forget the One who gave you the ability to enjoy life in the first place.

Rest your body, but don’t neglect your soul.

Smile with your family, but remember Allah often.

Enjoy your blessings, but remain grateful to the One who bestowed them.

When your weekend combines rest with worship, recreation with gratitude, and happiness with remembrance of Allah, you return to the new week spiritually refreshed and closer to your Creator.

May Allah bless our weekends with peace, protect us from sin and heedlessness, strengthen our faith, and allow every new week to begin with hearts full of gratitude and trust in Him. Ameen.
