10 SUNNAH ACTS TO PRACTICE ON JUMU’AH
Jumu’ah is the most virtuous day of the week. It is a day of worship, remembrance, and renewal. While attending the Friday prayer is obligatory for eligible Muslim men, every Muslim can benefit from observing the Sunnah practices associated with this blessed day.
Here are ten Sunnah acts that can help make every Friday more rewarding.
1. PERFORM GHUSL
One of the most emphasized Sunnah acts on Friday is taking a ritual bath before going to the mosque. Ghusl reflects cleanliness and respect for the sacred gathering of Muslims.
Beginning Jumu’ah in a state of physical purity prepares both the body and the heart for worship.
2. WEAR CLEAN AND PRESENTABLE CLOTHES
Islam encourages Muslims to appear neat and dignified when attending Jumu’ah. Wearing clean clothes demonstrates respect for fellow worshippers and for the house of Allah.
There is no requirement to buy new garments every Friday. What matters is cleanliness and modesty.
3. APPLY PERFUME (FOR MEN)
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged men to apply pleasant fragrance before attending Jumu’ah. It creates a pleasant environment in the mosque and reflects the Islamic emphasis on personal hygiene.
Women should avoid wearing perfume when going out in public.
4. USE THE SIWAK
Cleaning the mouth with the siwak before the Friday prayer is another Sunnah that many Muslims overlook.
A fresh mouth is not only respectful toward those around us but is also beloved in Islamic teachings.
5. RECITE SURAH AL-KAHF
Reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Friday is among the well-known Sunnah practices.
It serves as a reminder of faith, patience, trials, and trust in Allah. Setting aside time to read and reflect on its meanings can bring immense spiritual benefit.
6. SEND ABUNDANT SALAWAT UPON THE PROPHET ﷺ
Friday is the best day to increase prayers and blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Whether while driving, working, or sitting quietly, continue saying:
Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala aali Muhammad.
A few moments spent in salawat can earn great rewards by the permission of Allah.
7. GO TO THE MOSQUE EARLY
Arriving early for Jumu’ah is a Sunnah that carries tremendous reward.
The earlier a person reaches the mosque, the greater the reward mentioned in authentic hadith. Early arrival also allows time for voluntary prayers, Qur’an recitation, and quiet reflection before the khutbah.
8. LISTEN ATTENTIVELY TO THE KHUTBAH
The khutbah is an essential part of Jumu’ah.
Avoid unnecessary speech, using your phone, or anything that distracts you or others. Listening carefully allows you to benefit from the reminders and guidance delivered by the imam.
9. MAKE SINCERE DU’A
Friday contains a special hour during which Allah accepts supplications.
Ask Him for forgiveness, steadfastness, beneficial knowledge, halal sustenance, righteous offspring, acceptance of good deeds, and success in this life and the Hereafter.
Do not forget to pray for your parents, your family, the Muslim Ummah, and those facing hardship around the world.
10. CONTINUE IN WORSHIP AFTER JUMU’AH
The blessings of Friday do not end when the prayer finishes.
Continue remembering Allah, recite the Qur’an, visit relatives, give charity, help someone in need, or spend quality time with your family in a halal and meaningful way.
Jumu’ah should inspire us to carry its lessons into the rest of the week.
MAKE EVERY FRIDAY BETTER THAN THE LAST
The beauty of Islam lies in its consistency. Small acts performed regularly are beloved to Allah.
If you make these ten Sunnah practices part of every Friday, you will find that Jumu’ah becomes more than a weekly obligation—it becomes a weekly source of spiritual renewal.
May Allah enable us to honour the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ, accept our Jumu’ah, forgive our sins, and make every Friday a means of drawing closer to Him. Ameen.
