THE BLESSING OF BEING ALIVE TODAY

Every morning that a Muslim wakes up is a gift that should never be taken for granted. While many people begin their day thinking about work, school, business, or other responsibilities, a believer begins with gratitude, knowing that simply being alive is one of Allah’s greatest blessings.

There are countless people who went to bed last night but did not wake up to witness a new day. Others woke up but are unable to move, speak, or carry out their daily activities due to illness or hardship. Yet Allah, in His infinite mercy, has allowed us to see another sunrise, breathe another breath, and enjoy another opportunity to worship Him.

This alone is a blessing worthy of endless gratitude.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us a beautiful supplication to recite upon waking:

“All praise is due to Allah, who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.”

This daily remembrance reminds us that sleep is like a temporary death, and waking up is a reminder of the resurrection that will one day come. Every new day is therefore not just another twenty-four hours—it is another chance to prepare for our meeting with Allah.

Unfortunately, many people become so accustomed to the blessings they enjoy that they no longer recognise them. Good health, eyesight, hearing, family, food, shelter, and safety become ordinary in our eyes, even though millions of people around the world long for these very blessings.

Allah reminds us in the Qur’an that if we are grateful, He will surely increase us. Gratitude is not limited to saying “Alhamdulillah.” True gratitude is shown by using Allah’s blessings in ways that please Him. Our eyes should look at what is lawful, our tongues should speak the truth, our hands should perform righteous deeds, and our feet should walk towards places that earn Allah’s pleasure.

As you go through today, remember that this day is a trust from Allah. The hours you spend today will never return. Use them wisely by remembering Allah, fulfilling your obligations, helping others, and avoiding anything that distances you from your Creator.

A believer does not simply wake up to another day—they wake up to another opportunity to earn the pleasure of Allah.
