THE POWER OF THE 27TH NIGHT: WHY MANY MUSLIMS HOPE IT IS LAYLATUL QADR

As Ramadan reaches its final days, the atmosphere among Muslims around the world changes. Mosques become fuller at night, homes become quieter in worship, and hearts turn more sincerely toward Allah. Among the last ten nights of Ramadan, the 27th night holds a special place in the hearts of many believers.

This is because many Muslims believe it may be Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Decree  the most powerful night of the entire year.

Allah speaks about this night in the Qur’an in Surah Al-Qadr, where He says that Laylatul Qadr is better than a thousand months. A thousand months is more than eighty years of worship. This means that sincere acts of worship done in this one night can carry rewards greater than a lifetime of devotion.

Because of this immense blessing, Muslims across the world intensify their worship on the 27th night. The night is filled with prayers, Qur’an recitation, dhikr, and heartfelt du’a. It is a night where people cry to Allah for forgiveness, guidance, and mercy.

Although the exact night of Laylatul Qadr was not specified, the Prophet ﷺ instructed the believers to search for it during the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly the odd nights. Among these, the 27th night has historically been widely observed by many scholars and communities as a strong possibility.

However, it is important to remember that the wisdom behind the hidden timing of Laylatul Qadr is to encourage Muslims to worship throughout the last ten nights rather than focusing on just one night. Every one of these nights carries immense reward and opportunity.

The Prophet ﷺ himself would increase his acts of worship during the final ten nights more than at any other time of the year. He would spend the nights in prayer and wake his family so they could also share in the blessings of these precious moments.

On this special night, one of the most beautiful supplications taught by the Prophet ﷺ is:

“O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love to forgive, so forgive me.”

This simple but powerful du’a reminds us that Laylatul Qadr is not only about reward, but about purification of the heart and seeking Allah’s mercy.

The 27th night of Ramadan is therefore a powerful opportunity. It is a night to reconnect with Allah, to ask sincerely for forgiveness, and to make du’a for our families, our communities, and the entire Ummah.

Whether it is Laylatul Qadr or not, no sincere worship on this night is ever wasted. Every prayer, every tear, and every whispered supplication is known by Allah.

May Allah allow us to witness the blessings of Laylatul Qadr and accept all our worship during these final nights of Ramadan.
