THE NIGHT BETTER THAN 1000 MONTHS: UNDERSTANDING LAYLATUL QADR

Among the many blessings that Allah has granted the Muslim Ummah, one of the greatest is Laylatul Qadr  the Night of Decree. This extraordinary night occurs during the last ten nights of Ramadan and carries rewards beyond imagination.

Allah highlights the greatness of this night in the Qur’an in Surah Al-Qadr, where He says that Laylatul Qadr is better than a thousand months . This means that worship performed on this single night is more valuable than worship performed for over eighty-three years.

This incredible opportunity reflects the vast mercy of Allah. The lifespans of the Ummah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are generally shorter than those of earlier nations, yet Allah has given believers a chance to gain the rewards of a lifetime in just one night.

Laylatul Qadr is also the night when the Qur’an was first revealed. It marked the beginning of divine guidance for humanity, bringing light, wisdom, and direction for all generations to come.

During this blessed night, the angels descend to the earth by the permission of Allah, bringing peace and blessings until the break of dawn. It is a night filled with tranquility, mercy, and acceptance of prayers.

Because of its immense importance, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged Muslims to seek Laylatul Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly the odd nights. These nights include the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th nights.

The wisdom behind not revealing the exact date is to motivate believers to remain consistent in their worship throughout the entire period rather than focusing on just one night.

Believers seeking Laylatul Qadr should increase their acts of worship. Night prayers are among the most rewarding acts during these nights. Standing before Allah in the quiet hours of the night allows the heart to connect deeply with its Creator.

Reciting and reflecting on the Qur’an is another important act. Ramadan is the month of the Qur’an, and these nights are an opportunity to strengthen our relationship with its guidance.

Making sincere dua is also highly recommended. One of the most powerful supplications taught by the Prophet for these nights is:

“Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.”
“O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love to forgive, so forgive me.”

Giving charity, remembering Allah frequently, and seeking forgiveness are also acts that carry immense reward during these nights.

Laylatul Qadr is not simply a night to observe; it is a night to actively seek. It is a moment when hearts turn completely to Allah, hoping for His mercy, forgiveness, and blessings.

Ramadan is nearing its end, but the greatest night of the year may still be ahead.

Do not miss the opportunity.

Stand in prayer. Recite the Qur’an. Make sincere dua and seek forgiveness.

Because the night better than a thousand months could be the night that transforms your life.
