THE BEAUTY OF PATIENCE (SABR) IN RAMADAN
Ramadan is a month that teaches patience in ways that are both spiritual and practical. From the moment a Muslim wakes up for suhoor until the sun sets, the believer practices restraint. Hunger, thirst, tiredness, and the challenges of daily life become reminders that patience is a powerful act of worship.
Patience in Ramadan is not only about abstaining from food and drink. It is about controlling anger, guarding the tongue, and responding to difficulties with calmness and faith. A fasting person may encounter stress at work, traffic on the road, or disagreements with others, but Ramadan invites the believer to respond differently with sabr.
The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), taught that fasting is a shield. This means fasting protects a person from sin and harmful behavior. When someone insults or provokes a fasting person, the Prophet advised that the believer should simply say, “I am fasting.” This simple statement reflects self-control and patience.
Patience strengthens faith because it reminds us that life is temporary and that every difficulty has meaning when endured for the sake of Allah. When a believer patiently resists temptation, controls anger, and remains grateful even while fasting, they develop a stronger connection with their Creator.
Ramadan also teaches patience through worship. Standing in long prayers at night, reciting the Quran, giving charity, and maintaining consistency in good deeds require discipline. These acts train the soul to persevere and remain focused on what truly matters.
Allah praises those who are patient and promises them immense rewards. The Quran repeatedly reminds believers that Allah is with those who practice patience. This companionship from Allah is one of the greatest honors a believer can receive.
As the days of Ramadan continue, each moment of patience becomes an opportunity for spiritual growth. Every time a person restrains their anger, avoids gossip, or responds kindly instead of harshly, they are building a character that reflects true faith.
When Ramadan ends, the lessons of patience should not disappear. The believer who has trained their heart during this blessed month should continue living with patience, humility, and trust in Allah throughout the year.
Patience is not weakness. It is strength of the highest level the strength to control oneself for the sake of Allah.
