RAMADAN 09: THE ESSENCE OF FASTING

Ramadan is the month in which Allah made fasting obligatory upon the believers  not as a ritual of hardship, but as a means of spiritual elevation. To live Ramadan consciously, we must move beyond the surface and understand what fasting truly represents.

WHY WE FAST

Allah سبحانه وتعالى states in the Qur’an:

“O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain taqwa.”

The objective is clear: taqwa God-consciousness. Fasting trains the believer to become aware of Allah in private and in public. When no one sees you, and you still refrain from eating and drinking, that is taqwa in action.

WHAT FASTING REPRESENTS

1. Submission
Fasting is a declaration of obedience. You leave what is normally lawful  food, drink, marital intimacy  purely because Allah commanded it. This develops discipline and surrender to divine guidance.

2. Sincerity
Unlike prayer or charity, fasting is hidden. Only Allah truly knows if someone is fasting properly. The Prophet ﷺ conveyed that Allah says:

“Fasting is for Me, and I will reward it.”
Sahih al-Bukhari

Scholars explain that this indicates a special, immeasurable reward known only to Allah.

3. Self-Control
Fasting weakens desires and strengthens the will. It teaches restraint  not only from food and drink but from anger, gossip, false speech, and harmful behavior. Without moral discipline, hunger alone does not fulfill the purpose of fasting.

4. Gratitude
When you feel hunger, you appreciate blessings that are usually taken for granted. Gratitude increases humility and compassion toward those who struggle daily.

FASTING BEYOND HUNGER

The essence of fasting is not starvation; it is purification. It is a detox of the heart before the body. The tongue fasts from falsehood. The eyes fast from the unlawful. The ears fast from backbiting. The heart fasts from arrogance and envy.

Ramadan is therefore a comprehensive training program  physical restraint leading to spiritual refinement.

LIVING THE FAST CONSCIOUSLY

• Renew your intention daily.
• Guard your speech and behavior as carefully as you guard your fast.
• Increase remembrance and Qur’an recitation.
• Reflect on how your fasting is shaping your character.

When fasting transforms your character, then you are living its essence.

May Allah grant us fasting that brings true taqwa, sincere hearts, and accepted deeds. Ameen.
