CONDEMNATION OF THE DEMOLITION OF BAPTIST PRIMARY SCHOOL 1, IDIKAN IBADAN
A member of the Oyo State Muslim Community (MUSCOS) Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade condemns in strong terms the demolition of Baptist Primary School 1, Idikan, an action reportedly carried out under the authority of the Baptist Church. This development is regrettable, unjust, and deeply disturbing, considering the critical role the school has played in the educational and social life of the Idikan community for decades.
Baptist Primary School 1, Idikan, is a historic public primary school that has served generations of pupils, the overwhelming majority of whom are Muslims, drawn from the host community. The school is located within a community whose population and identity are predominantly Muslim, making the demolition not only an educational setback but also a serious communal concern.
It is particularly unfortunate that a faith-based institution, which should uphold moral responsibility, fairness, and compassion, would be associated with an action that disrupts the education of innocent children and undermines community peace. Schools are centres of learning and development; they should be protected and preserved, not destroyed.
If there were issues bordering on ownership, control, or administration of the school, such matters ought to have been resolved through due process, consultation, and lawful engagement with government authorities and community stakeholders. Resorting to demolition is unacceptable and sets a dangerous precedent.
Agunbiade therefore calls on:
The Oyo State Government to urgently clarify the circumstances under which this demolition was approved or allowed.
Relevant authorities to hold accountable all individuals and institutions involved in authorising or executing this action.
The government to immediately provide alternative and adequate learning facilities for the affected pupils.
Clear assurances that public schools and public assets will be protected from arbitrary destruction, irrespective of historical religious affiliations.
The demolition of a school is an assault on the future of children and a threat to peaceful coexistence. No religious institution should be associated with actions that undermine education and social harmony.
Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade reiterates his commitment to peaceful engagement, justice, and the protection of the educational rights of all children.
