THE FIRST SACRIFICE IN HISTORY: THE STORY OF PROPHET ADAM (AS)

When we think of Qurbani, our minds often go to Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his remarkable sacrifice in submission to Allah (SWT). But did you know the very first sacrifice in human history took place during the time of the first Prophet—Prophet Adam (AS)?

This powerful and foundational story reminds us that the tradition of sacrifice in Islam began from the earliest moments of human existence.

The Story of Habil and Qabil

Prophet Adam (AS), the first human and Prophet, was the father of two sons—Habil (Abel) and Qabil (Cain). As both were of age to marry, a situation arose in which they both desired to marry the same woman.

To resolve the matter, Allah (SWT) commanded that each son offer a sacrifice. Whichever sacrifice was accepted by Allah would determine who would marry her.

Habil, a shepherd, sincerely chose his best animal—a healthy ram—as his offering. Qabil, a farmer, on the other hand, offered poor-quality crops, not from his best yield but from what he considered less valuable.

Allah (SWT), who knows what lies in every heart, accepted Habil’s sincere sacrifice and rejected Qabil’s. Blinded by jealousy and rage, Qabil committed the first murder on Earth by killing his brother, Habil.

“And recite to them the story of Adam’s two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah], and it was accepted from one of them but not from the other. Said [the latter], ‘I will surely kill you.’ Said [the former], ‘Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous.’”
Qur’an | 5:27
The First Lesson in Sincere Sacrifice
This story serves as a timeless lesson: the value of a sacrifice lies not in its size or worth, but in the sincerity and intention behind it. Allah (SWT) only accepts sacrifices made with piety and humility.

It also reminds us that jealousy and pride can lead to tragic consequences, while sincerity and righteousness are what draw us closer to Allah.

Carrying On the Legacy of Sacrifice
