Saudi Arabia has set a new record for the highest number of Umrah pilgrims in a single day, with 500,000 worshippers performing the pilgrimage at the Grand Mosque on Thursday, according to the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.
The unprecedented turnout highlights the growing influx of visitors to Islam’s holiest site, particularly during Ramadan, and underscores the vital role of advanced monitoring systems in managing large crowds.
To ensure smooth movement and safety, authorities have implemented state-of-the-art technology, including AI-powered surveillance and smart sensors installed at key entry points.
These sensors track real-time foot traffic, while advanced cameras monitor movement patterns and identify congestion hotspots with precision.
This integrated monitoring system allows for immediate crowd assessment, helping authorities optimize worshipper distribution in high-density areas such as the Mataf, where pilgrims circumambulate the Kaaba, and the Sa’i, the walkway between Safa and Marwah.
Officials emphasized that the new framework enhances rapid decision-making, ensuring a steady flow of pilgrims and reinforcing safety measures. The system is particularly crucial during peak hours, enabling swift interventions to prevent overcrowding.
Security forces in Makkah have also intensified efforts to maintain order, working around the clock to manage crowds, assist the elderly, reunite lost children with their families, and ensure smooth movement throughout the mosque.
These advancements are part of a broader initiative by Saudi authorities to integrate cutting-edge technology into pilgrimage management, enhancing the overall experience for worshippers.
Officials have indicated plans to further expand the monitoring system, strengthening crowd control strategies as the number of visitors continues to rise.
