KINDNESS DOESN’T MAKE YOU WEAK
Have you ever wanted to be kind to someone but stopped because you were afraid people would call you weak?
Perhaps your friends think being gentle means allowing others to take advantage of you. Maybe you feel that you must insult people back whenever they insult you, or act harshly to prove that nobody can intimidate you.
But here is an important reminder: you do not have to become cruel to prove that you are strong.
As Muslims, we should understand that kindness is an important part of good character.
ALLAH LOVES GOODNESS
Allah says:
“Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.” Qur’an 16:90 — translation of the meaning.
Allah commands justice and good conduct. Kindness is not something to be ashamed of; it is part of the character a Muslim should strive to develop.
You can be kind without seeking attention. You can speak respectfully without expecting everyone to like you. You can help someone without announcing it to the world.
Good character is not determined by how intimidating you appear to other people.
YOU CAN BE KIND AND STILL HAVE BOUNDARIES
Some people misunderstand kindness. They assume that being kind means agreeing with everyone, accepting every request or remaining silent when someone treats you badly.
That is not what kindness requires.
You can politely say no when a request is unreasonable. You can correct someone who has made a mistake. You can stand up against injustice without insulting or humiliating the person responsible.
For example, if someone asks you to help them cheat in an examination, kindness does not mean agreeing. You can refuse respectfully and encourage them to do what is right.
If a friend repeatedly disrespects you, you can explain your concerns and establish boundaries.
Kindness is not the absence of strength. It is strength guided by good character.
DO NOT COPY THE BAD BEHAVIOUR OF OTHERS
Imagine that someone mocks your appearance in front of your classmates. You may feel tempted to find something embarrassing about them and use it against them.
But would that really make the situation better?
Responding to cruelty with more cruelty may create a cycle in which everyone becomes comfortable hurting others.
You can defend yourself without becoming a bully. You can speak up without using humiliating language. And you can walk away from unnecessary arguments without feeling defeated.
If someone repeatedly bullies or threatens you, seek help from a trusted adult or appropriate authority. You do not have to handle every situation alone.
PRACTISE KINDNESS IN SMALL WAYS
You do not need to do something extraordinary to demonstrate good character.
You can:
* Speak respectfully to your parents, teachers and classmates.
* Help someone who is struggling without making them feel inferior.
* Avoid laughing when someone is being humiliated.
* Admit when you are wrong and apologise sincerely.
* Treat people fairly, even when they cannot offer you anything in return.
* Refuse to participate in gossip or online harassment.
These actions may appear small, but they help build a character that reflects Islamic values.
HEART CHECK
The world may sometimes celebrate arrogance, insults and the ability to embarrass others. Do not let that convince you that kindness is outdated.
You can be confident without being proud, firm without being cruel and gentle without being weak.
Let your strength be seen in your self-control, your fairness and your willingness to do what is right.
REFLECTION: Have you ever treated someone harshly because you were afraid that kindness would make you look weak?
DU’A:O Allah, beautify my character, make me kind without making me vulnerable to injustice, and grant me the strength to stand for what is right. Ameen.
