THE PROPHET ﷺ AND THE DANGER OF FOLLOWING THE CROWD

EVERYONE IS DOING IT, BUT DOES THAT MAKE IT RIGHT?
Imagine being the only person in your group who refuses to participate in something wrong.
Your friends laugh at you. They call you boring. Someone says, “You think you are better than us?”
Suddenly, doing what you know is right feels much harder.
This is the pressure many young Muslims experience today.
Some are afraid to pray around their friends. Others participate in gossip, mockery, dishonest behavior, or haram relationships because they fear being rejected.
But the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind us that truth is not determined by popularity.
Before receiving revelation, Muhammad ﷺ was known among the people of Makkah for his honesty and trustworthiness. After Allah appointed him as His Messenger, he called people to worship Allah alone, even when powerful members of his society opposed him.
He did not abandon the truth simply because many people rejected his message.
His example teaches us an important lesson:
You should respect people, but you should not follow them blindly.
THE DANGER OF FOLLOWING EVERYONE
Allah warns believers in the Qur’an:
*”And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah.”*
— Qur’an 6:116, excerpt.
This verse reminds us that numbers alone do not determine what is right.
Something can become popular without becoming permissible in Islam.
A video can receive millions of views while promoting harmful behavior. A group of friends can normalize gossip. A social media trend can encourage people to mock others or compromise their values.
Popularity does not make something right.
As a Muslim, you must learn to examine your choices through the guidance of the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah.
FOUR LESSONS FOR YOUNG MUSLIMS
1. Do not sacrifice your faith for acceptance.
If your friends only accept you when you disobey Allah, their approval is costing you too much.
You can be friendly, respectful, and kind without participating in everything they do.
2. Learn to say no without being disrespectful.
You do not have to insult people when refusing an invitation to do something wrong.
A simple statement such as, “I’m not comfortable with that,” can be enough.
3. Choose your friends carefully.
Good friends encourage you to improve. They respect your values and do not pressure you to abandon your principles.
Look for friendships that help you grow in character, knowledge, and faith.
4. Be courageous enough to stand alone.
Sometimes, you may be the only person in your group who refuses to participate in something harmful.
Do not assume you are wrong simply because you are outnumbered.
WHAT IF PEOPLE MOCK YOU FOR PRACTICING ISLAM?
Perhaps someone laughs at your hijab, makes jokes about your prayers, or mocks you for avoiding something you believe is haram.
It can hurt, especially when the person is someone you want to impress or befriend.
But remember that your relationship with Allah is more important than winning everyone’s approval.
You do not need to respond to every insult with an argument. Remain calm, maintain your boundaries, and seek company that respects your faith.
You can treat people kindly without allowing them to pressure you into wrongdoing.
A QUESTION TO ASK YOURSELF
Before following a trend or agreeing with your friends, pause and ask:
* Is this consistent with my Islamic values?
* Could this harm me or another person?
* Am I doing this because I believe it is right, or because I am afraid of being rejected?
* Would I still make this choice if nobody else were doing it?
These questions can help you make more thoughtful decisions.
HEART CHECK
You were not created merely to follow trends, impress people, or win everyone’s approval.
You are a servant of Allah, and your choices matter.
Do not allow the fear of being different to become the reason you abandon what you know is right.
Be kind to people. Respect others. Keep learning. And when you face pressure to do something wrong, remember that the approval of people is not more important than the pleasure of Allah.
May Allah keep our hearts firm upon the truth and protect our youth from harmful influences. Ameen.
