WORKING HARD WHILE LEAVING THE RESULTS TO ALLAH

You have prepared for an examination, applied for a job, started a business, or worked towards an important goal. You have made du’a, put in the effort, and hoped for a good outcome.

Then the result arrives, and it is not what you expected.

The job goes to someone else. The examination result is disappointing. The business takes longer to grow than you planned.

In moments like these, it is easy to question your efforts or wonder whether your du’a has been heard.

As Muslims, we need to understand an important principle: our responsibility is to make sincere efforts through permissible means, while recognising that the final outcome belongs to Allah.

WHAT IS TAWAKKUL?

Tawakkul means placing one’s trust in Allah while taking appropriate action.

It does not mean refusing to work, ignoring responsibilities, or waiting for success without making an effort.

If you want to pass an examination, study and prepare. If you want a job, develop relevant skills and submit applications. If you want to build a business, understand your customers, manage your resources, and improve your service.

Then place your trust in Allah, knowing that you cannot control every factor that influences the outcome.

Allah says:

“And whoever relies upon Allah—then He is sufficient for him.”

— Qur’an 65:3

This verse reminds believers to rely on Allah. Trust does not remove the need for effort; it gives us a sound perspective as we pursue our goals.

DO NOT CONFUSE TRUST WITH INACTION

Sometimes people say they are leaving everything to Allah when they have not taken reasonable steps towards what they want.

A person may pray for employment but refuse to improve their CV, learn useful skills, or apply for suitable positions. Another may ask Allah to bless a business but neglect customers and fail to keep proper records.

Du’a is important, but it should not become an excuse for avoiding responsibility.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught the importance of taking action while trusting Allah. In Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 2517, he instructed Ibn ‘Abbas to be mindful of Allah and taught him about trusting Allah’s decree.

The broader lesson is that faith and responsible action belong together. We do what is within our ability and seek Allah’s help in what lies beyond our control.

WHAT IF YOU WORK HARD AND STILL FAIL?

This is one of the most difficult parts of trusting Allah.

You may do everything reasonably expected of you and still not get the result you wanted. That can be painful, especially when the goal is important to your future.

However, a disappointing outcome does not automatically mean that your efforts were wasted or that Allah has abandoned you.

Allah says:

“And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives.”

— Qur’an 53:39

This verse highlights the importance of striving. The effort you make can develop your knowledge, discipline, patience, and experience, even when the immediate result is disappointing.

Sometimes, you may need to change your approach. At other times, you may need more preparation or a different opportunity. You may also have to accept that certain outcomes are beyond your control.

Trusting Allah allows you to acknowledge disappointment without allowing it to destroy your willingness to move forward.

LEARN TO SEPARATE YOUR EFFORT FROM YOUR EXPECTATIONS

There is a difference between working towards a goal and believing that you must achieve a particular result for your life to have value.

You can prepare well for an examination without assuming that one result will determine your entire future.

You can apply for a job without believing that rejection means you are incapable.

You can start a business without assuming that slow growth means you are a failure.

Your goals matter, but your identity should not depend entirely on achieving them.

After a setback, ask yourself three questions:

– Did I make a sincere and reasonable effort?

– What can I learn or improve?

– What is the next beneficial step available to me?

These questions help you move from endless worry towards reflection and action.

HOW CAN YOU PRACTISE TAWAKKUL DAILY?

Make du’a before and during your efforts. Ask Allah for guidance, beneficial opportunities, and the ability to make sound decisions.

Prepare properly. Trusting Allah does not mean ignoring the practical steps required for success.

Accept that uncertainty is part of life. You will not always know how things will turn out. Do your best with the information available to you.

Learn from your mistakes. If something goes wrong because of an error you made, acknowledge it and make improvements rather than using trust in Allah to avoid responsibility.

Remain grateful in different circumstances. Gratitude does not require you to pretend disappointment is painless. It means continuing to recognise Allah’s blessings while working through difficulties.

TRUST ALLAH WITH WHAT YOU CANNOT CONTROL

Dear young Muslim, you do not have to know exactly how your future will unfold before you take the next responsible step.

Work hard. Seek knowledge. Make du’a. Ask for advice. Correct your mistakes. Pursue what is beneficial through permissible means.

Then remember that no human being controls every part of the outcome.

If success comes, be grateful and avoid arrogance. If disappointment comes, allow yourself to process it, learn what you can, and continue seeking what is good.

HEART CHECK

Do your part sincerely, trust Allah with the outcome, and do not allow uncertainty to stop you from making progress.

May Allah bless our efforts, guide our decisions, strengthen our tawakkul, and grant us contentment with His decree. Amin.
