DON’T WASTE WHAT ALLAH HAS GIVEN YOU
Have you ever looked back at your day and realised that you accomplished almost nothing?
You spent hours scrolling through social media.
You postponed the task you promised yourself you would complete.
You wasted food that could have been saved.
You bought something unnecessary while neglecting a more important responsibility.
You kept saying, “I will do it tomorrow,” until days or weeks passed.
As young Muslims, we need to understand that the blessings Allah gives us are not things to treat carelessly.
Allah says: “And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveller, and do not spend wastefully.” Qur’an 17:26 — translation of the meaning.
WASTEFULNESS IS NOT ONLY ABOUT MONEY
When people hear the word waste, they may think only about spending money unnecessarily.
But consider how many other blessings we can waste.
Time: Spending hours on activities that bring no benefit while neglecting important responsibilities.
Knowledge: Learning something beneficial but refusing to practise it.
Food: Taking more than we need and throwing the rest away.
Talents: Having abilities that could benefit ourselves and others but never making an effort to develop them.
Opportunities: Ignoring chances to learn, improve or do good because we keep postponing action.
Not every moment of rest is wasteful. Rest is important. Entertainment can also be permissible and beneficial.
The problem is when carelessness becomes a habit and important responsibilities are repeatedly neglected.
YOUR BLESSINGS ARE A TRUST
Think about the things Allah has made available to you.
Do you have time to learn a useful skill?
Use some of that time wisely.
Do you have knowledge that could help someone?
Share it in an appropriate way.
Do you have food?
Take what you need and avoid unnecessary waste.
Do you have money?
Spend responsibly and remember those who need help.
Do you have a talent?
Develop it and look for halal ways to use it.
You do not need to be wealthy or famous before you can make good use of your blessings.
Small, consistent actions matter.
FIVE WAYS TO STOP WASTING YOUR BLESSINGS
1. Plan your day. Choose a few important tasks instead of allowing the entire day to disappear without direction.
2. Set limits on distractions. Reduce unnecessary scrolling and use your phone intentionally.
3. Spend wisely. Distinguish between your needs, your wants and what you can genuinely afford.
4. Avoid unnecessary waste.Take reasonable portions of food and use your belongings carefully.
5. Use your abilities for good. Learn, practise and look for ways to benefit others.
ASK YOURSELF
What blessing do I have today that I am not making good use of?
Is it my time?
My education?
My health?
My money?
My opportunity to learn about Islam?
Choose one area and begin improving it.
You do not have to change everything in one day. Start with a small action and remain consistent.
HEART CHECK
A blessing becomes more meaningful when you use it responsibly and in ways that please Allah.
May Allah help us recognise our blessings, protect us from wastefulness and grant us the wisdom to use what we have for good. Ameen.
