THE HILF AL-FUDUL: THE PROPHET (SAW) AND STANDING FOR JUSTICE
Before Prophet Muhammad (SAW) received revelation, he witnessed an agreement in Makkah that stood against injustice.
It was known as Hilf al-Fudul.
The agreement was formed by several people in Makkah who came together to support those who were wronged and ensure that people’s rights were protected.
The Prophet (SAW) participated in this pact before his prophethood.
Later in his life, he spoke positively about the agreement and indicated that he would still respond to such a call to justice.
This gives young Muslims an important lesson:
Stand against injustice, even when it does not benefit you personally.
Sometimes young people see someone being bullied and remain silent because they don’t want trouble.
Someone may be mocked in a group chat.
A classmate may be treated unfairly.
Someone may be excluded because of their appearance, background or financial situation.
And everyone watches without saying anything.
WHAT CAN YOUTH LEARN?
1. Don’t support injustice because the victim isn’t your friend.
Justice should not depend on whether you personally like someone.
2. Don’t become a bully’s audience.
Laughing, sharing or reposting harmful content can encourage wrongdoing.
3. Speak up wisely.
Standing against injustice does not mean creating another problem. Seek help from a trusted adult, teacher or responsible authority when necessary.
4. Be someone people feel safe around.
Your presence should make people feel protected, not threatened.
A QUESTION FOR YOU
If someone was being bullied and nobody else wanted to help, would you walk away?
Or would you find a safe and wise way to help?
HEART CHECK
The Seerah teaches us that justice is not only something we talk about. It is something we practise.
Stand for what is right. Protect people’s dignity. And never become part of someone’s oppression simply because everyone else is doing it.
