For Muslims around the world, Friday is unlike any other day. It is the only day of the week with a special congregational prayer that adult Muslim men are required to attend, and it is a day filled with unique virtues mentioned in the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
But what makes Friday so special?
The answer goes beyond the Jumu’ah prayer. Friday is a day with a remarkable place in Islamic history.
A DAY CHOSEN BY ALLAH
Friday was chosen by Allah as the weekly day of gathering for the Muslim Ummah.
Instead of treating it as a weekend or a public holiday alone, Islam gives Friday a spiritual purpose. It is a day for worship, reflection, making dua and strengthening ties within the Muslim community.
Every week, Muslims leave their businesses, offices and daily activities to answer the call to Jumu’ah, demonstrating that obedience to Allah takes priority over worldly affairs.
THE DAY ADAM (AS) WAS CREATED
One of the greatest virtues of Friday was mentioned by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who said that it is the best day on which the sun rises.
He explained that on Friday:
- Prophet Adam (AS) was created.
- He entered Paradise.
- He was sent down to the earth.
- And the Last Hour will also occur on a Friday.
These events make Friday unique in the history of humanity.
THE COMMAND TO ATTEND JUMU’AH
Allah specifically commands believers in the Qur’an that when the call to the Friday prayer is made, they should leave trade and hasten to the remembrance of Allah.
This verse highlights the importance of giving priority to worship over business, meetings or personal commitments during the time of Jumu’ah.
Once the prayer is completed, Muslims are encouraged to return to their work and seek Allah’s bounty.
This balance between worship and earning a livelihood is one of the beautiful features of Islam.
THERE IS A SPECIAL HOUR FOR DUA
Among the greatest blessings of Friday is the existence of a special period during which Allah answers supplications.
The Prophet ﷺ informed his companions that there is a time on Friday when, if a Muslim asks Allah for something good, Allah grants that request.
Although scholars have differed regarding the exact timing, many believe it is during the last hour before sunset.
For this reason, Muslims are encouraged to increase their dua throughout Friday.
THE VIRTUE OF SURAH AL-KAHF
Another well-known Sunnah is to recite Surah Al-Kahf on Fridays.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever recites it on Friday will be granted a light that extends until the next Friday.
This weekly practice serves as a reminder of the lessons contained in the Surah, including faith, patience, sincerity and trust in Allah.
SENDING BLESSINGS UPON THE PROPHET ﷺ
Friday is also the best day to increase one’s salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged Muslims to send abundant blessings upon him on Fridays because these salutations are presented to him.
This simple act earns great reward and strengthens a believer’s connection with the Sunnah.
HOW SHOULD A MUSLIM PREPARE FOR FRIDAY?
The Sunnah encourages Muslims to prepare well for Jumu’ah by:
- Performing Ghusl before attending the prayer.
- Wearing clean and respectable clothing.
- Applying perfume (for men).
- Going to the mosque early.
- Listening attentively to the Khutbah.
- Making plenty of dua.
- Reciting Surah Al-Kahf.
- Sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.
These acts transform Friday into a weekly opportunity for spiritual renewal.
A WEEKLY OPPORTUNITY
Unlike Ramadan, which comes once a year, Friday comes every week.
Every seven days, Allah gives Muslims another opportunity to renew their faith, seek forgiveness, remember Him and reconnect with their community.
For this reason, Muslims should not see Friday as just another day on the calendar. It is a weekly gift from Allah a day filled with blessings, opportunities for worship and reminders of the purpose of life.
When Friday arrives, it is not simply the start of the weekend. It is the best day of the week, a day honoured by Allah and filled with opportunities for every believer to draw closer to Him.
