ISLAM EXPLAINED: WHY DOES ALLAH TEST THOSE HE LOVES?

"Do people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tested?" — Qur'an 29:2

INTRODUCTION

One of the most difficult questions people ask during moments of hardship is:

“If Allah loves me, why am I being tested?”

When a person loses something valuable, faces financial difficulties, experiences illness, struggles with family problems, or goes through emotional pain, it is natural to wonder why such challenges are happening.

Many people mistakenly believe that hardship means Allah is angry with them or that they have been abandoned.

But Islam teaches a different perspective.

Trials are not always signs of rejection. Sometimes, they are signs of Allah’s care. They can be a means of purification, spiritual growth, forgiveness, and bringing a believer closer to their Creator.

Understanding the wisdom behind Allah’s tests changes the way we see difficulties. Instead of only asking, “Why me?”, a believer learns to ask, “What is Allah teaching me through this?”

LIFE IS A TEST

Islam teaches that this world was not created as a place of permanent comfort and perfection.

This life is a journey filled with both ease and difficulty.

Allah says:

“He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed.”
— Qur’an 67:2

Every person will be tested in different ways.

Some are tested through wealth.

Some are tested through poverty.

Some are tested through health.

Some are tested through illness.

Some are tested through success.

Some are tested through hardship.

The difference is not whether a person will be tested, but how they respond to those tests.

WHY DOES ALLAH TEST HIS SERVANTS?

1. TESTS REVEAL THE STRENGTH OF OUR FAITH

It is easy to claim faith when everything is going well.

When life is comfortable, everyone can say they trust Allah.

But true faith becomes visible during difficult moments.

A test reveals what is inside the heart.

Will a person turn toward Allah or away from Him?

Will they remain patient or lose hope?

Will they continue believing in Allah’s wisdom even when they do not understand?

Allah says:

“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.”
— Qur’an 2:155

Trials separate words from reality. They show the sincerity of our relationship with Allah.

2. TESTS REMOVE OUR SINS

One of the greatest mercies of Allah is that difficulties can become a means of forgiveness.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

A hardship that feels painful may actually be carrying hidden blessings.

A moment of difficulty may erase sins that would otherwise remain on a person’s record.

3. TESTS BRING US CLOSER TO ALLAH

Many people become closer to Allah during difficult times.

When everything is going smoothly, some people become distracted by worldly matters.

But hardship often reminds the heart of what truly matters.

A person who has lost something may discover the power of sincere dua.

A person facing difficulty may rediscover the importance of Salah.

A person experiencing hardship may realise that only Allah provides true comfort.

Allah says:

“And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the supplication of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.”
— Qur’an 2:186

Sometimes a test is not meant to push us away from Allah; it is meant to bring us back to Him.

4. TESTS DEVELOP PATIENCE (SABR)

Patience is one of the greatest qualities in Islam.

However, patience does not mean pretending that pain does not exist.

Islam allows believers to feel sadness, cry, seek help, and acknowledge difficulty.

Patience means continuing to trust Allah despite the pain.

Prophet Ya’qub (Jacob) عليه السلام experienced deep grief when he was separated from his son Yusuf (Joseph) عليه السلام, yet he remained connected to Allah.

He said:

“So patience is most fitting. And Allah is the One sought for help against that which you describe.”
— Qur’an 12:18

True patience is not the absence of pain. It is maintaining faith while experiencing pain.

5. TESTS PREPARE US FOR SOMETHING GREATER

Sometimes Allah allows difficulties because He is preparing a person for a greater blessing.

A seed must break before it grows.

A diamond is formed under pressure.

Similarly, difficulties can develop qualities within a believer:

  • Strength
  • Wisdom
  • Humility
  • Compassion
  • Dependence upon Allah

A person who has experienced hardship often becomes more understanding toward others going through similar struggles.

DOES BEING TESTED MEAN ALLAH IS ANGRY?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the biggest misunderstandings about trials.

Some of the most beloved people to Allah experienced the greatest difficulties.

The Prophets were tested:

  • Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) عليه السلام was tested with sacrifice.
  • Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) عليه السلام was tested with betrayal and imprisonment.
  • Prophet Ayyub (Job) عليه السلام was tested with illness and loss.
  • Prophet Muhammad ﷺ faced rejection, hardship, and loss.

Their trials did not mean Allah abandoned them.

Rather, their patience elevated their status.

WHY DO GOOD PEOPLE SUFFER?

This is one of life’s deepest questions.

Islam teaches that this world is not the final destination.

If this life were the only existence, many things would appear unfair.

The innocent may suffer.

The wrongdoer may appear successful.

The righteous may experience hardship.

But Islam teaches that ultimate justice will be established in the Hereafter.

Allah is Al-Adl  The Most Just.

No pain, no sacrifice, and no patience will be forgotten.

HOW SHOULD A MUSLIM RESPOND TO TESTS?

1. Turn Back to Allah

The first response to difficulty should be returning to Allah through:

  • Salah
  • Dua
  • Dhikr
  • Seeking forgiveness

Hardship should strengthen our connection with Allah, not weaken it.

2. Have Good Expectations of Allah

A believer should always believe that Allah’s wisdom is greater than their understanding.

Something may appear harmful while Allah has placed goodness within it.

Allah says:

“Perhaps you dislike something and it is good for you; and perhaps you love something and it is bad for you. Allah knows, while you do not know.”
— Qur’an 2:216

3. Be Patient and Keep Moving Forward

Islam does not teach believers to give up.

A person facing difficulty should continue making effort, seeking solutions, and trusting Allah.

4. Remember That Hardship Has an End

No difficulty lasts forever.

Allah promises:

“Indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.”
— Qur’an 94:5-6

The believer remembers that every test has a limit, and Allah’s mercy is greater than any hardship.

SIGNS THAT A TEST MAY BE BENEFICIAL

A hardship can become a blessing when it causes a person to:

  • Become closer to Allah
  • Appreciate blessings more
  • Improve their character
  • Become more compassionate
  • Leave sinful habits
  • Depend more upon Allah

The value of a test is not only in what happens to us, but in who we become because of it.

LESSONS WE CAN TAKE AWAY

Allah’s tests are not designed to destroy believers; they are opportunities for growth.

They remind us that we are dependent upon Him.

They teach us patience.

They purify our hearts.

They strengthen our faith.

A believer does not measure Allah’s love only by comfort and ease. Sometimes Allah’s greatest gifts come through situations that initially feel painful.

CONCLUSION

Every believer will face tests.

The question is not whether difficulties will come, but how we respond when they arrive.

When hardship comes, remember:

Allah sees your struggle.

Allah knows your pain.

Allah hears your dua.

Allah’s wisdom is greater than what we can understand.

The believer who remains patient and trusts Allah discovers that even trials can become pathways to blessings.

May Allah grant us patience during hardship, gratitude during ease, and hearts that always trust His wisdom. Ameen.
