MALLAM AGUNBIADE IBRAHIM: TUESDAY OF RECKONING: OYO HIGH COURT TO DELIVER JUDGMENT IN LANDMARK HIJAB CASE

The High Court of Justice, Iyaganku, Ibadan, is set to deliver judgment on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, in what has become one of the most closely watched legal cases on religious freedom and the constitutional rights of Muslim students in Oyo State.

The case, scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at Court 17, concerns Suit No. 47/2026, filed by five Muslim schoolgirls, through their guardians, against the Oyo State Government and relevant education authorities.

The claimants are seeking judicial determination over what they describe as the denial of their constitutional right to wear the Islamic hijab alongside their approved school uniforms in some government-owned secondary schools with missionary heritage.

Named as defendants in the suit are the Governor of Oyo State, the Commissioner for Education, the Attorney-General of Oyo State, and the Permanent Secretary of the Oyo State Ministry of Education.

Beyond the question of school uniforms, the case raises broader constitutional issues bordering on freedom of religion, the protection of fundamental human rights, equality before the law, and the extent of religious accommodation within public educational institutions.

The outcome of the judgment is expected to provide important legal clarification on the rights of students to manifest their religious beliefs in public schools and could have wider implications for similar matters across the state.

As the court prepares to deliver its verdict, members of the Muslim community have been encouraged to attend the proceedings peacefully and responsibly as a demonstration of respect for the judicial process and confidence in the rule of law.

Those planning to be present are advised to conduct themselves with dignity, remain orderly throughout the proceedings, and comply fully with all directives issued by court officials and security personnel.
