WHY WE BEGIN UMRAH WITH IHRAM
Every great journey begins with preparation. Before a traveller sets out, they gather the essentials needed for the road ahead. The journey of Umrah is no different, except that its preparation is not only physical but also deeply spiritual.
The first major step of Umrah is entering the state of Ihram. While many people associate Ihram with the two white garments worn by men, Ihram is much more than clothing. It is a sacred state of worship that marks the beginning of a believer’s journey to the House of Allah.
Understanding why Umrah begins with Ihram helps pilgrims appreciate that they are not simply travelling to Makkah—they are entering a special covenant of devotion, humility, and obedience to Allah.
WHAT IS IHRAM?
Ihram is a sacred state that every pilgrim must enter before crossing the designated boundary known as the Miqat. It begins with making the intention (niyyah) for Umrah and reciting the Talbiyah.
For men, this includes wearing two simple white, unstitched pieces of cloth. Women do not have a special Ihram garment; they wear loose, modest Islamic clothing that covers the body appropriately while avoiding adornment.
The clothing is only one aspect of Ihram. The true essence of Ihram is entering a state where certain actions become prohibited in order to cultivate greater mindfulness and obedience to Allah.
A SYMBOL OF EQUALITY
One of the most striking features of Ihram is its simplicity.
When millions of pilgrims gather in Makkah, it becomes impossible to distinguish the wealthy from the poor, the famous from the unknown, or leaders from ordinary people.
The businessman stands beside the labourer.
The professor walks beside the farmer.
The king worships alongside the servant.
In the sight of Allah, no one is honoured because of wealth, nationality, race, or social status. The only measure of superiority is righteousness.
Allah says:
“Indeed, the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.”
(Qur’an 49:13)
Ihram removes worldly distinctions and reminds every believer that all human beings are equal before their Creator.
A REMINDER OF THE HEREAFTER
The white garments worn by men resemble the simple shroud (kafan) in which Muslims are buried.
This resemblance is intentional and deeply meaningful.
As pilgrims wear these simple garments, they are reminded that one day every person will stand before Allah with nothing except their deeds.
No expensive clothing.
No jewellery.
No titles.
No worldly achievements.
Only faith and righteous actions will matter.
This reflection encourages humility and sincere repentance before Allah.
LEAVING WORLDLY DISTRACTIONS BEHIND
Entering Ihram means leaving behind many of the comforts and habits of everyday life.
Pilgrims are instructed to avoid:
- Cutting their hair or nails.
- Using perfume.
- Hunting animals.
- Engaging in marital intimacy.
- Arguing or quarrelling.
- Using foul or offensive language.
These restrictions are not meant to make life difficult. Rather, they train the believer to exercise self-control and discipline.
For a few days, the pilgrim learns that worship requires sacrifice, patience, and conscious obedience.
LEARNING SELF-DISCIPLINE
One of the greatest lessons of Ihram is that obedience to Allah extends beyond acts of worship.
A pilgrim may pray regularly and recite Qur’an beautifully, but if they argue, insult others, or lose their temper during Umrah, they miss one of the most important objectives of the pilgrimage.
Allah says:
“…And do not commit sin, nor dispute unjustly during pilgrimage…”
(Qur’an 2:197)
Although this verse specifically addresses Hajj, its lesson applies equally to Umrah. Pilgrims are expected to display patience, kindness, and good manners throughout their journey.
THE TALBIYAH: ANSWERING ALLAH’S CALL
After entering Ihram, pilgrims repeatedly recite the Talbiyah:
Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk. Labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Innal hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk. La sharika lak.
These words carry profound meaning.
Every repetition declares:
- “I have answered Your call, O Allah.”
- “I submit to You alone.”
- “All blessings belong to You.”
- “You have no partner.”
The Talbiyah reminds believers that the purpose of life itself is to answer Allah’s call through faith, obedience, and worship.
A LESSON IN HUMILITY
Ihram strips away pride.
No one wears designer clothing.
No one competes in fashion.
No one seeks admiration from others.
Instead, every pilgrim appears before Allah in simplicity, recognising that true beauty lies in sincerity, humility, and righteousness.
It is a powerful reminder that worldly appearances fade, but a heart devoted to Allah remains valuable forever.
IHRAM IS MORE THAN A GARMENT
Perhaps the greatest misunderstanding about Ihram is thinking that it ends when the special clothing is removed.
The garments come off after Umrah, but the lessons should remain.
A Muslim should continue to guard their speech.
Continue to avoid arguments.
Continue to exercise patience.
Continue to remember Allah often.
Continue to live with humility.
If these qualities remain after returning home, then the spirit of Ihram has truly entered the heart.
A JOURNEY THAT BEGINS WITH THE HEART
The first step of Umrah is not walking towards the Ka’bah it is turning the heart towards Allah.
Ihram prepares the believer for this transformation. It teaches equality, humility, discipline, patience, and complete submission to the Creator.
When understood correctly, Ihram is not merely something a pilgrim wears. It is a state of worship that prepares the soul for one of the most meaningful journeys a Muslim can undertake.
