ASHURA IS OVER, BUT YOUR NEW ISLAMIC YEAR HAS JUST BEGUN
With Ashura now behind us, many Muslims may feel that one of the major spiritual moments of Muharram has passed. However, in reality, the new Islamic year is only beginning. The opportunities for growth, worship, and self-improvement remain wide open.
Just as people make plans and goals at the start of a new calendar year, Muslims should use the beginning of the Hijri year to evaluate their relationship with Allah. The question is not how the year started, but how it will continue.
Every new year is a reminder that life is moving forward. Days, months, and years pass quickly, bringing every person closer to their meeting with Allah. The wise believer uses this reality as motivation to improve before it is too late. A new Islamic year is therefore more than a change of date; it is a reminder to renew faith and purpose.
One area that deserves attention is prayer. The five daily prayers remain the foundation of a Muslim’s relationship with Allah. A believer should ask whether they are performing their prayers on time, with concentration and sincerity. Small improvements in prayer can have a significant impact on every aspect of life.
The new year is also an opportunity to strengthen one’s connection with the Qur’an. Many Muslims intend to read the Qur’an regularly but struggle with consistency. Even a small daily portion can transform a person’s spiritual condition over time. Consistency often produces greater results than occasional bursts of effort.
Another important goal is improving character. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent to perfect noble character. A successful year should not only be measured by material achievements but also by growth in honesty, patience, kindness, humility, and generosity.
Family relationships also deserve attention. Many people become busy with work and personal pursuits while neglecting parents, spouses, children, and relatives. The beginning of the Islamic year is a suitable time to repair broken relationships, seek forgiveness, and strengthen family bonds.
Charity should be another priority. Helping others does not always require wealth. A kind word, sincere advice, assistance to a neighbor, or support for a struggling family can all become sources of immense reward. The best deeds are often those performed regularly, even if they appear small.
The reality is that nobody knows whether they will witness another Muharram. For this reason, believers should treat this year as a precious opportunity. The months ahead may bring challenges, but they will also bring countless opportunities to earn Allah’s pleasure.
As the days of Muharram continue, let every Muslim make a sincere intention to become better than they were last year. The goal is not perfection but steady progress toward Allah through worship, good character, and beneficial actions.
May Allah bless this new Hijri year, forgive our shortcomings, guide our hearts, and make the coming months filled with faith, barakah, and success in this world and the Hereafter. Ameen.
