RECITATION OF THE QUR’AN IN RAMADAN: RETURNING TO THE BOOK OF ALLAH

Ramadan is not only the month of fasting. It is the month of the Qur’an. The connection between Ramadan and the Divine Revelation is foundational to understanding the true spirit of this blessed month.

Allah says:

“The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Qur’an was revealed…”
Qur’an 2:185

This verse establishes the central identity of Ramadan. It is the month in which guidance descended. It is the season of revelation, mercy, and clarity. Therefore, increasing our recitation of the Qur’an in Ramadan is not optional spiritual enthusiasm—it is returning the month to its original purpose.

 The Prophetic Practice

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not treat Ramadan like any other month in relation to the Qur’an.

It is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari:

“…Gabriel used to meet him every night during Ramadan to revise the Qur’an with him…”
(Vol. 4, Book 61, Hadith 3556)

This nightly revision between the Prophet ﷺ and Jibril (عليه السلام) demonstrates the seriousness of engaging with the Qur’an during Ramadan. Even though the Prophet ﷺ was the recipient of revelation, he still reviewed it consistently.

A similar narration is also recorded in Sunan an-Nasa’i (Book 22, Hadith 2095), reinforcing the established Sunnah of focused Qur’anic engagement in this month.

If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ revised the Qur’an every single night in Ramadan, what then should be our standard?

Why Qur’an Recitation Intensifies in Ramadan

There are several reasons the believer increases recitation in this month:

1. Ramadan is the month of revelation.
2. Rewards for deeds are multiplied.
3. Hearts are softer due to fasting.
4. Distractions are reduced.
5. The gates of mercy are open.

Fasting disciplines the body. The Qur’an nourishes the soul. When combined, they produce spiritual transformation.

Moving Beyond Ritual Reading

Recitation is not about speed alone. It is about reflection (tadabbur), sincerity, and application.

Ask yourself:

• What is Allah telling me in these verses?
• What commands am I neglecting?
• What qualities should I improve?
• What sins must I abandon?

The goal is alignment. The Qur’an is not merely to be completed it is to be implemented.

Even if one cannot complete the entire Qur’an in Ramadan, consistency matters more than quantity without reflection. A few pages daily with understanding can reshape a life.

Practical Approach to Qur’an in Ramadan

• Set a daily recitation target (e.g., one juz’ per day).
• Allocate fixed time after Fajr or before Iftar.
• Listen to a qualified reciter to improve tajweed.
• Read translation and brief tafsir to deepen understanding.
• Make du‘a that Allah makes the Qur’an the spring of your heart.

Many Muslims complete the Qur’an at least once in Ramadan. Some complete it multiple times. But the true success is emerging from Ramadan with a stronger relationship with the Book of Allah.

Spiritual Reflection

Consistent Qur’an recitation illuminates the heart. It corrects priorities. It realigns intentions. It exposes spiritual weaknesses and offers divine solutions.

The Qur’an was revealed as guidance. Ramadan is the annual opportunity to reconnect with that guidance deeply and intentionally.

Let this Ramadan not pass without meaningful engagement with the Qur’an. Let it shape your character, your worship, and your decisions.

May Allah make the Qur’an the light of our hearts, the remover of our worries, and the guide of our lives.
