MOTHERHOOD IN ISLAM: FINDING STRENGTH THROUGH THE PROPHET’S TEACHINGS

Motherhood is one of the most sacred and demanding journeys a woman can walk. It stretches the body, tests the mind, and refines the soul. It’s a role that often goes unseen, yet in the sight of Allah, it carries unmatched honor. In the sleepless nights, the endless chores, and the quiet sacrifices, lies an act of worship so profound that even the smallest effort is recorded as reward.

The Sacred Weight of a Mother’s Role

In Islam, motherhood is not a worldly label  it is a divine station. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ elevated the status of mothers in a way no other faith or culture had done before. When a companion once asked him, “Who is most deserving of my good company?” he replied:

“Your mother.”
The man asked, “Then who?”
He said, “Your mother.”
“Then who?”
“Your mother.”
“Then who?”
“Your father.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)

Three times, he ﷺ reminded us that a mother’s right comes before all others. That repetition was not coincidence  it was emphasis, mercy, and truth.

The Prophet’s Teachings as a Source of Strength

Motherhood is full of quiet struggles: fatigue, worry, and moments of self-doubt. But the Prophet ﷺ taught that every hardship endured for Allah’s sake carries immense reward. Even the pain of childbirth, the exhaustion of feeding, and the sleepless nights spent comforting a child are written as acts of sabr (patience) and jihad an-nafs striving of the self.

He ﷺ said:

“When a woman becomes pregnant until she delivers, and until she weans, she receives the reward of one who is constantly fasting and standing in prayer.”
(Ibn Hibban)

Such mercy in Islam is unmatched. Allah sees what no one else does the quiet tears of a mother, the constant giving, the love that never asks for return.

Redefining Strength Through Faith

In the Prophet’s example, strength was never loud or harsh  it was gentle resilience. He taught that patience is not weakness, but power rooted in trust. For mothers, this means that every test  whether it’s raising children alone, struggling financially, or balancing work and home  is not a sign of failure but of Allah’s special training.

When you feel unseen, remember that Allah called Himself Ash-Shakoor  The Most Appreciative. Every act of nurturing, every whispered du’a over your child’s head, every moment you put your needs aside  He appreciates it.

Finding Peace in the Everyday

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ often reminded his companions that even small acts, when done with intention, become worship. The same applies to motherhood. Feeding your child becomes sadaqah. Smiling at them is mercy. Teaching them a verse of Qur’an earns ongoing reward long after you’re gone.

This transforms motherhood from a duty into devotion  a spiritual journey filled with endless opportunities to earn Allah’s pleasure.

A Mother’s Reward Beyond This Life

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Paradise lies under the feet of mothers.”
(An-Nasa’i)

This is not just poetic — it’s divine justice. It means every sacrifice, every sleepless night, every ache endured with patience is paving your path to Jannah.

So to every mother reading this — you are not just raising children; you are raising an ummah. You are shaping hearts that will worship long after you’re gone. You are doing holy work, even when no one claps for you.

Hold onto the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ. Let his compassion remind you that your labor is love, your exhaustion is worship, and your patience is a mark of honor in the sight of Allah.

“And be patient, for indeed Allah does not allow the reward of those who do good to be lost.”
(Qur’an 11:115)

Motherhood is hard  but it is sacred.
And every moment of it, seen or unseen, is a step closer to Paradise.
