THE IMPORTANCE OF KINDNESS TO PARENTS IN ISLAM

In Islam, after the worship of Allah, one of the greatest obligations upon a believer is to honor and show kindness to their parents. The Qur’an and Sunnah emphasize that caring for one’s parents is not only an act of gratitude but also a pathway to Jannah.

Qur’anic Guidance on Parents

Allah ﷻ repeatedly mentions kindness to parents alongside His worship, showing its high status:

“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.”
(Surah Luqman, 31:14)

This verse highlights both the struggles of parents, especially mothers, and the duty of the child to show gratitude.

The Status of Parents in Hadith

The Prophet ﷺ placed immense importance on dutifulness to parents. When asked about the most beloved deeds to Allah, he said:

  1. Prayer at its proper time.

  2. Kindness to parents.

  3. Striving in the path of Allah.
    (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

This shows that honoring parents is second only to prayer  the foundation of faith.

Why Kindness to Parents Matters

  1. Gratitude for Sacrifices – Parents, especially mothers, endure hardship, sleepless nights, and countless sacrifices for their children.

  2. Source of Barakah (Blessing) – Serving parents invites Allah’s mercy and blessings into one’s life.

  3. Key to Jannah – The Prophet ﷺ said: “Paradise lies beneath the feet of mothers.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i)

  4. A Continuous Duty – Even after parents pass away, a believer can honor them by making dua, giving charity on their behalf, and maintaining ties of kinship.

 Practical Ways to Show Kindness

  • Respectful speech – Avoid harsh words, even in disagreement.

  • Service in old age – Be patient and compassionate when parents become dependent.

  • Small acts of love – Smiles, greetings, and helping without being asked.

  • Prayers and dua – Regularly asking Allah to forgive and bless them.

  • Maintaining family ties – Keeping in touch with relatives to honor one’s parents’ legacy.

Dua for Parents

The Qur’an teaches us a beautiful supplication:

“My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.”
(Surah Al-Isra, 17:24)

Conclusion

Kindness to parents is not a one-time duty but a lifelong commitment. By serving them with love, respect, and gratitude, a believer earns the pleasure of Allah and secures a place in Paradise. In a world where independence is often emphasized, Islam reminds us that true success lies in humility, service, and honoring the very people who gave us life.
