SPIRITUAL DIGEST: RAMADAN DAY 5 (A DU’A FOR MERCY AND FORGIVENESS)
By: Ajape Sefiu A., Adedeji Monsurat A.
The spiritual digest for Ramadan Day 5 is a supplication for mercy and forgiveness.
رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِن نَّسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا
Rabbana laa tu’aakhiznaaa in naseenaaa aw akhtaanaa.
Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred.
This verse is part of Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), the last verse of the surah, which is a powerful supplication made by the believers, asking Allah for:
- Forgiveness for mistakes and forgetfulness – Acknowledging human weakness and asking Allah not to punish us for unintentional sins.
- Allah’s Mercy and Compassion – Seeking divine kindness in moments of weakness or unintentional errors.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) mentioned that this verse was revealed as a mercy from Allah, as previous nations were sometimes punished for forgetfulness or unintentional mistakes, but Allah granted ease to the Ummah of Muhammad.
Significance of This Dua
- It acknowledges human limitations—we forget, we make mistakes, but Allah is Most Forgiving.
- It teaches us to seek Allah’s mercy instead of despairing over our shortcomings.
- It reminds us that Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity (2:286).
When to Recite This Dua
- When feeling guilty about mistakes or forgetfulness.
- After realizing an unintentional sin or wrongdoing.
- During moments of regret, seeking Allah’s mercy.
- Before sleeping, as part of nightly supplications.
- In times of self-reflection and repentance.
Lessons from This Dua
- Allah’s Mercy is greater than our sins – He does not hold us accountable for things we forget or do unintentionally.
- Asking for forgiveness is essential – Even for mistakes we are unaware of.
- Human imperfection is natural – But Allah’s compassion is limitless.
May Allah forgive our mistakes, guide us to righteousness, and grant us His mercy. Ameen!
