HALAL EARNINGS: WHERE YOUR MONEY COMES FROM MATTERS

In today’s world, financial success is often measured by how much money someone makes, the things they own, and the lifestyle they can afford. Young people are constantly encouraged to find ways to make money quickly, sometimes without considering the methods involved.

From online scams and dishonest business practices to misleading advertisements and questionable deals, the pressure to earn can tempt people to compromise their values.

But for a Muslim, earning money is not only about how much enters your account. It is also about how that money is earned.

Islam teaches us that our financial choices are part of our responsibility before Allah.

WHY DOES THE SOURCE OF YOUR MONEY MATTER?

Money can help you support your family, pay your school fees, develop your skills, start a business, and give charity. These are meaningful purposes, but the pursuit of money should not lead you into what Allah has prohibited.

Allah says:

“And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you to consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].”— Qur’an 2:188

This verse warns against acquiring wealth through unjust means.

For young Muslims, this principle applies to everyday decisions. It matters whether you tell the truth about a product, honour an agreement, return money that does not belong to you, or refuse to participate in a scam.

A large income does not make dishonesty acceptable. Similarly, earning a modest amount through honest work is not something to be ashamed of.

THE TEMPTATION OF QUICK MONEY

Imagine seeing someone your age displaying expensive clothes, a new phone, and an impressive lifestyle online. You do not know how they earned the money, but you begin to feel that your own progress is too slow.

Then someone offers you an opportunity that promises huge returns with little effort. The arrangement involves deceiving customers, collecting money under false pretences, or helping someone commit fraud.

You may feel tempted because you need money urgently. You may even convince yourself that you will do it only once.

But a financial opportunity should not be judged by its promised reward alone. You must also consider whether it is honest, lawful, and free from prohibited elements.

Do not allow financial pressure or the desire to impress others to push you into choices that could harm innocent people and compromise your faith.

HALAL EARNINGS REQUIRE HONESTY

Halal income is not simply about avoiding obvious criminal activity. It also involves fulfilling responsibilities and treating people fairly.

If you sell clothes, describe their condition honestly. If you run a food business, maintain appropriate hygiene and do not deliberately mislead customers about what they are buying. If you offer a service, communicate clearly about your ability, price, and delivery time.

If you are employed, carry out your duties honestly and respect the terms of your employment.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned against dishonesty in trade. In Sahih Muslim 102, he said:

“Whoever cheats us is not one of us.”

This powerful warning reminds Muslims that deception is not a small matter simply because it happens in business.

Your character should remain visible in your financial dealings, whether you are selling to one person, serving a large organisation, or running a business online.

WHAT IF YOUR INCOME IS SMALL?

One of the biggest challenges young people face is the belief that a small income means they are not making progress.

You may be learning a skill, working an entry-level job, or running a small business that has not yet grown. Meanwhile, people around you appear to be advancing much faster.

Do not allow comparison to make you despise honest beginnings.

You can start with a modest business, learn a useful skill, apply for suitable jobs, or build your experience gradually. Growth may take time, and financial responsibilities can make the journey difficult, but you do not have to abandon your principles to make progress.

Allah says:

“And whoever fears Allah—He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect.”
— Qur’an 65:2–3

These verses encourage believers to maintain taqwa and trust Allah’s provision. They are not a promise that every financial difficulty will disappear immediately, but they remind us that we should not abandon obedience to Allah out of fear about our livelihood.

HOW CAN YOUNG MUSLIMS PURSUE HALAL INCOME?

Develop useful skills. Learn skills that can help you provide a genuine service, whether in technology, education, design, writing, trade, or another field.

Research opportunities carefully. Be cautious of schemes promising guaranteed profits, demanding secrecy, or requiring you to deceive others.

Keep your agreements. Be clear about prices, deadlines, refunds, and responsibilities.

Manage your money wisely. void spending simply to impress others. Budgeting, saving, and planning can help you use your income responsibly.

Ask when you are unsure. Some financial arrangements involve complex questions about interest, contracts, investments, or other prohibited elements. Seek guidance from a trustworthy scholar who understands the details instead of making assumptions.

CHOOSE BARAKAH OVER APPEARANCES

Dear young Muslim, your goal should not be to become wealthy at any cost. It should be to pursue a good livelihood while remaining faithful to Allah’s guidance.

Work hard. Learn. Build your skills. Look for opportunities. Ask Allah to bless your efforts. But do not measure your success only by the amount of money you make.

Let your earnings support a life of responsibility, generosity, and worship rather than becoming a reason to compromise your values.

HEART CHECK

It is better to grow through honest effort than to build a lifestyle on the suffering or deception of others.

May Allah provide us with halal and wholesome sustenance, protect us from dishonest earnings, and place barakah in what He grants us. Amin.
