WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I FORGET A RAK’AH?

Have you ever finished your salah and suddenly thought:

“Wait… did I pray three rak’ahs or four?”

Or perhaps you accidentally stood up before completing your prayer.

Don’t panic. Islam has guidance for situations like this.

Allah does not want us to become overwhelmed by mistakes. The Prophet (SAW)  taught Muslims what to do when they forget something during salah.

WHAT IF YOU FORGET A RAK’AH?

If you realise during the prayer that you have missed a rak’ah, you should complete the missing rak’ah.

For example, if you are praying Dhuhr and realise that you have only prayed three rak’ahs instead of four, you should pray the fourth rak’ah.

But what if you only realise after finishing the prayer?

The details depend on exactly when you realise and what happened, so when this occurs, ask a knowledgeable teacher or scholar about your particular situation.

WHAT IF YOU ARE NOT SURE?

Sometimes you genuinely cannot remember whether you prayed three or four rak’ahs.

Islam provides guidance for doubt during salah, including building upon what you are certain about and performing sujud as-sahw (the prostration of forgetfulness) where applicable.

The Prophet (SAW) taught:

> “If one of you is in doubt concerning his prayer and does not know how much he has prayed, three or four, then let him cast aside the doubt and build upon what he is certain of…” Sahih Muslim

This teaches us something important: don’t let doubt turn your salah into panic.

WHAT IS SUJUD AS-SAHW?

Sujud as-sahw means the prostration performed because of forgetfulness in salah.

It is prescribed for certain mistakes or omissions in prayer.

The exact details of when it is performed and whether it is before or after salam can differ according to the situation and school of Islamic jurisprudence.

If you are learning this for the first time, ask your teacher or local scholar to demonstrate it to you.

DON’T GIVE UP BECAUSE YOU MADE A MISTAKE

A mistake in salah does not mean you should become afraid of praying.

You are learning.

Even adults sometimes forget.

What matters is that you learn how to correct your mistakes and continue improving.

HEART CHECK

Making a mistake during salah is not a reason to abandon salah.

Learn the rules, correct your mistakes and keep praying.

Allah knows when you are sincerely trying to worship Him.
