THE MUSLIM YOUTH AND THE PRESSURE TO “MAKE IT”
“By this age, I should have a good job.”
“My friends are already earning more than me.”
“Everyone is travelling.”
“Someone younger than me has already started a successful business.”
“I am falling behind.”
These thoughts are becoming common among young people.
Social media has made it easier to see other people’s achievements while hiding the years of effort, difficulties and setbacks behind them.
The result?
Many young Muslims are beginning to feel as though they are running out of time.
EVERYONE’S TIMELINE IS DIFFERENT
Your friend may graduate before you.
Someone else may start earning before you.
Another person may get married earlier.
Someone may build a business while you are still searching for direction.
That does not mean your life is failing.
Allah has created people with different circumstances, abilities, opportunities and journeys.
Your responsibility is not to live someone else’s timeline.
It is to make good use of the opportunities Allah has given you.
SUCCESS IS NOT ONLY WHAT PEOPLE CAN SEE
The world often celebrates visible achievements.
Money.
Cars.
Travelling.
Businesses.
Followers.
Job titles.
But Islam teaches us to think beyond what people can see.
A person may have little wealth but have beautiful character.
Someone may not be famous but may be beloved to Allah because of sincere worship.
Someone may be quietly working hard today and not see the results immediately.
Do not measure your entire life using someone else’s public achievements.
DON’T SACRIFICE YOUR DEEN TO “MAKE IT”
There is nothing wrong with wanting a good career.
There is nothing wrong with building a business, earning money or pursuing ambitious goals.
Islam encourages beneficial work and responsibility.
But the question is:
**What are you willing to sacrifice to achieve it?**
Will you abandon salah?
Will you earn through haram means?
Will you deceive people?
Will you destroy your health?
Will you become so obsessed with money that you forget Allah?
Success that takes you further from Allah requires serious reflection.
WORK HARD AND TRUST ALLAH
Tawakkul does not mean sitting down and waiting for things to happen.
Take action.
Learn a skill.
Apply for opportunities.
Study.
Build your experience.
Ask for advice.
Try again after failure.
Then leave the outcome to Allah.
Allah says: “And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives.” — Qur’an 53:39
Your effort matters, even when the result takes time.
STOP TURNING SOMEONE ELSE’S SUCCESS INTO YOUR FAILURE
Someone else’s success does not automatically mean you have failed.
Celebrate their achievement without using it as evidence against yourself.
Instead of saying:
“Why am I not there?”
Ask:
“What can I learn?”
“What can I improve?”
“What step can I take today?”
This changes comparison into growth.
YOUR VALUE IS GREATER THAN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT
Money matters.
Work matters.
Providing for yourself and others matters.
But your value before Allah is not simply a number in your bank account.
Your character matters.
Your obedience matters.
Your honesty matters.
Your intentions matter.
Your relationship with Allah matters.
KEEP BUILDING
Maybe you have not “made it” yet.
Maybe you are still learning.
Maybe you are starting again.
Maybe your progress is slower than you expected.
Keep going.
Make du’a.
Work honestly.
Develop yourself.
Take opportunities.
Avoid haram shortcuts.
HEART CHECK
Remember that your life is not a race against everyone around you.
You do not need to become someone else to have a meaningful life. Build what you can, with what Allah has given you, while keeping Him at the centre of the journey.
