Ghusl is the full ritual bath required in certain circumstances before a Muslim can perform acts of worship that require ritual purity, such as salah.
For young Muslims, understanding when ghusl becomes obligatory is extremely important.
WHEN DOES GHUSL BECOME REQUIRED?
One important situation is janabah
Janabah occurs following sexual activity involving the release of sexual fluid, and it can also occur because of a wet dream when sexual fluid is found.
For a person who experiences a wet dream, simply dreaming about something is not enough by itself to require ghusl.
What matters is whether there is evidence of sexual discharge.
The Prophet ﷺ explained this when a woman asked about wet dreams. He said: “Yes, if she sees the water.”
This shows that the actual discharge is relevant.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE A DREAM BUT FIND NOTHING?
If you wake up after a dream but there is no discharge, ghusl is not required merely because of the dream.
However, if you find sexual discharge after waking, ghusl is required.
This is why young Muslims should learn the difference rather than becoming unnecessarily worried.
HOW DO YOU PERFORM GHUSL?
A simple valid ghusl involves making the intention to remove the state requiring ghusl and ensuring that water reaches the entire body.
The Prophet ﷺ demonstrated a more complete method of ghusl, including washing the private area, performing wudu and then washing the entire body.
The important point is that water must reach all parts of the body.
Pay attention to places that are easily missed, such as:
* The hair and scalp.
* Behind the ears.
* The armpits.
* Between the fingers and toes.
* Other parts of the body where water may not easily reach.
DON’T BE EMBARRASSED TO LEARN
Topics involving puberty and purification can sometimes feel awkward.
But ignorance about purification can affect your salah.
If you are unsure whether ghusl is required, ask a trusted and knowledgeable person.
Islam encourages Muslims to learn.
