Young people make mistakes.
They say the wrong things.
They sometimes make poor decisions.
They may act without thinking about the consequences.
But how we correct a young person matters.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known for teaching people with wisdom and kindness. He corrected mistakes while also teaching the person what was right.
One well-known example is the young man who came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked for permission to commit zina. Instead of simply humiliating him or driving him away, the Prophet ﷺ spoke to him calmly and asked him questions that helped him understand the wrongness of what he was requesting.
The Prophet ﷺ then prayed for him.
This teaches us an important lesson:
Correction should aim to guide a person, not destroy them.
WHAT CAN YOUTH LEARN?
1. Accept correction.
When someone sincerely advises you, don’t automatically become defensive.
2. Learn from your mistakes.
Being corrected can help you become a better person.
3. Don’t let embarrassment stop you from seeking help.
If you have a question or struggle, find someone trustworthy and knowledgeable who can guide you.
WHAT CAN PARENTS, TEACHERS AND OLDER MUSLIMS LEARN?
Young people need boundaries, but they also need compassion.
Constantly insulting a child or teenager may make them afraid to ask questions.
A young Muslim should know:
“I can make a mistake and still ask for help.”
HEART CHECK
The goal of correcting someone is not to make them feel worthless.
The goal is to help them become better.
Correct with wisdom. Listen with patience. Guide with mercy.
