Sometimes, being a young Muslim isn’t easy.
You may be surrounded by people who don’t understand why you pray, why you dress modestly, why you avoid certain things, or why you say no to what everyone else considers “normal.”
Sometimes, you may even feel like you’re the only person trying to hold on to your deen.
But the Qur’an gives us a powerful example of young people who faced an environment that threatened their faith.
Allah tells us about the Companions of the Cave: “They were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.”

These were young people. They were not waiting until they became old before taking their faith seriously.
THEY CHOSE ALLAH OVER THEIR ENVIRONMENT
The society around them was not helping them remain firm upon their belief.
So they made a difficult decision: they separated themselves from an environment that was harming their faith and sought refuge in the cave.
Their story teaches us something important:
Your environment matters.
The people you spend time with, the content you consume, the conversations you participate in and the things you constantly expose yourself to can either strengthen your iman or slowly weaken it.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO FOLLOW THE CROWD
Maybe your friends are doing things you know are wrong.
Maybe everyone around you is making certain sins look normal.
Maybe you’re being pressured to join in because you don’t want to be called “boring” or “too religious.”
Remember the youths of the Cave.
They didn’t measure truth by popularity.
They chose Allah.
And sometimes, choosing Allah means being different.
PROTECT YOUR HEART
You may not be able to completely change your school, workplace, neighbourhood or family environment.
But you can control what you allow into your heart.
Choose good friends.
Follow beneficial Islamic content.
Attend gatherings that increase your iman.
Keep the Qur’an close.
Make salah a priority.
And when an environment is seriously pulling you away from Allah, have the courage to create healthy distance where possible.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE
If you are the only person in your group who wants to pray, pray.
If you’re the only one refusing something haram, refuse it.
If people laugh because you are trying to practise your deen, remain patient.
Being different for the sake of Allah is not something to be ashamed of.
The youths of the Cave were young, but Allah honoured their story so much that their courage is still being read about centuries later.
