THE RIGHT INTENTION: THE FIRST STEP OF A SUCCESSFUL UMRAH

Every act of worship in Islam begins with one essential element: intention. Before a Muslim enters the state of Ihram, performs Tawaf, or walks between Safa and Marwah, they must first examine the reason for making the journey.

Umrah is not simply a visit to Makkah. It is an act of worship performed solely to seek the pleasure of Allah. For this reason, the sincerity of a pilgrim’s intention is just as important as the rituals they perform.

Many people spend months preparing for Umrah. They save money, apply for visas, attend orientation programmes, and make travel arrangements. These preparations are necessary, but they should not overshadow the most important preparation of all—purifying one’s intention.

A sincere intention means travelling for the sake of Allah alone.

The goal should be to worship Him, seek His forgiveness, increase one’s faith, and draw closer to Him. Everything else, including shopping, sightseeing, or taking photographs, should remain secondary.

In today’s world, it is easy for intentions to become mixed. Some people become more concerned about posting their journey on social media than reflecting on the spiritual significance of being in the Haram. Others become preoccupied with buying gifts or documenting every moment of the trip.

There is nothing inherently wrong with taking photographs or purchasing gifts for loved ones. However, these activities should never become the primary purpose of the journey or distract a pilgrim from worship.

A sincere intention also influences how a person behaves throughout Umrah.

When the objective is to please Allah, a pilgrim is more likely to be patient during long queues, crowded conditions, and unexpected delays. They understand that these challenges are part of the journey and respond with good character rather than frustration.

On the other hand, when a person’s focus is primarily on comfort or personal convenience, minor inconveniences can easily lead to complaints and arguments.

Another important aspect of intention is avoiding riya’ (showing off).

Acts of worship lose much of their value when they are performed to gain admiration from people. A pilgrim should guard against seeking praise through their Umrah by constantly reminding themselves that Allah alone knows the sincerity of every heart.

Intention should also be renewed throughout the journey.

It is possible to begin Umrah with sincerity and later become distracted by worldly concerns. A believer should regularly remind themselves why they came to Makkah and strive to keep their worship sincere from the beginning of the journey until they return home.

Preparing the heart is just as important as preparing travel documents.

Before departing, spend time making dua and asking Allah to grant sincerity. Ask Him to protect you from pride, showing off, and distractions that may reduce the spiritual benefits of your Umrah.

It is also beneficial to make a personal commitment before travelling.

Decide that you will guard your prayers, avoid unnecessary arguments, lower your gaze, be patient with fellow pilgrims, and make the most of every opportunity to worship.

These commitments help translate a sincere intention into sincere actions.

A successful Umrah is not measured by the number of places visited or the amount of shopping completed. It is measured by the closeness a person develops with Allah and the positive change that remains after returning home.

Many people return from Umrah with Zamzam water, gifts, and memories.

The greatest return, however, is a heart that has become more conscious of Allah, more committed to worship, and more determined to live according to His guidance.

Before you enter the state of Ihram, take a moment to examine your intention.

Ask yourself why you are making this journey.

If your answer is to seek the pleasure of Allah and to earn His forgiveness, then you have already taken the first and most important step towards a successful Umrah.
