HOW TO PREPARE PHYSICALLY FOR UMRAH
When preparing for Umrah, many pilgrims focus on passports, visas, accommodation, and packing their luggage. While these are all important, one area that is often overlooked is physical preparation.
Umrah is an act of worship, but it also requires physical effort. Pilgrims spend long hours walking, standing, and moving through large crowds. A person who prepares physically before travelling is more likely to perform the rituals comfortably and concentrate fully on worship.
One of the best ways to prepare is by developing a regular walking routine several weeks before departure. Many pilgrims underestimate the amount of walking involved during Umrah. From moving between the hotel and the Haram to performing Tawaf and Sa’i, a pilgrim may walk several kilometres in a single day. Walking for 30 to 45 minutes each day before travelling can improve endurance and reduce fatigue.
Those who have existing medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, or heart-related illnesses should consult their doctor before travelling. Medical advice, prescribed medication, and a fitness assessment can help ensure that the journey is completed safely.
Pilgrims should also carry enough prescribed medication to last throughout their stay, along with a copy of any important medical prescriptions.
Another important aspect of physical preparation is choosing appropriate footwear.
Comfortable footwear suitable for long walks should be worn before travelling so that the feet become accustomed to them. Wearing brand-new shoes for the first time during Umrah can lead to blisters and discomfort that may affect worship.
Maintaining good hydration is equally important.
The climate in Saudi Arabia can be very hot, especially during the summer months. Pilgrims should make a habit of drinking adequate water before and during the journey. Dehydration can cause dizziness, fatigue, and difficulty performing the rituals.
Healthy eating should also form part of the preparation.
A balanced diet in the weeks before departure helps strengthen the body. While in Saudi Arabia, pilgrims should avoid overeating, particularly before performing Tawaf or Sa’i. Eating light, nutritious meals often helps maintain energy throughout the day.
Adequate rest is another factor that should not be ignored.
Some pilgrims become so eager to perform as many acts of worship as possible that they neglect sleep. While increasing worship is commendable, excessive exhaustion can reduce concentration and even affect one’s health. A balanced routine allows a pilgrim to worship consistently without becoming physically overwhelmed.
Personal hygiene is also important.
Crowded conditions make cleanliness even more essential. Pilgrims should maintain good hygiene, wash their hands regularly, and follow health advice provided by their group leaders and the relevant authorities. This helps protect both themselves and fellow pilgrims.
Those travelling with elderly family members should make additional preparations. Ensure they have any mobility aids they require, take regular breaks when necessary, and avoid rushing between locations. Patience and proper planning can make the journey easier for older pilgrims.
Mental preparation is closely connected to physical preparation.
Pilgrims should understand that tiredness, long walks, waiting periods, and crowded conditions are normal parts of Umrah. Accepting these realities before travelling reduces frustration and helps maintain a positive attitude throughout the journey.
It is also wise to avoid carrying unnecessary luggage.
Heavy bags can make movement more difficult, especially during transfers between airports, hotels, and transport vehicles. Packing only essential items makes travelling easier and less stressful.
Physical preparation should never be viewed as separate from spiritual preparation.
A healthy body enables a pilgrim to perform prayers with concentration, complete Tawaf and Sa’i comfortably, and spend more time in remembrance of Allah. Looking after one’s health is therefore part of being ready for this blessed journey.
As the August Umrah season approaches, intending pilgrims should prepare both their hearts and their bodies. By combining sincere worship with sensible physical preparation, they will be better equipped to make the most of every moment in Makkah and Madinah and return home with memories and spiritual benefits that last a lifetime.
