WHY SEEKING KNOWLEDGE IS A LIFELONG DUTY
One of the first revelations given to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) began with a command to read. This powerful beginning highlighted the importance of knowledge in Islam and set the foundation for a civilization that would become known for learning, scholarship, and intellectual excellence.
Unfortunately, many people view education as something that ends after graduation. Once school is completed, they stop actively seeking knowledge unless it is directly related to their jobs. Islam, however, teaches that learning is a lifelong responsibility.
Seeking knowledge helps Muslims understand their faith correctly. It enables them to worship Allah with understanding rather than mere habit. A believer who learns about the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the teachings of Islam is better equipped to distinguish truth from falsehood and guidance from misguidance.
Ignorance can be dangerous. Many misunderstandings, conflicts, and harmful practices arise because people act without proper knowledge. Islam encourages believers to verify information, ask questions, and seek guidance from qualified scholars when faced with matters they do not understand.
Knowledge is not limited to religious subjects alone. Beneficial knowledge includes fields that improve society and serve humanity, such as medicine, education, engineering, technology, agriculture, and business. Throughout history, Muslims made significant contributions in these areas because they understood that learning and faith complement one another.
One obstacle to learning is the belief that there is no time. Yet in an age where information is more accessible than ever, even a few minutes each day can lead to substantial growth. Reading beneficial books, listening to lectures, attending classes, or studying the Qur’an consistently can transform a person’s understanding over time.
Another challenge is pride. Some people assume they already know enough and become unwilling to learn from others. The greatest scholars in Islamic history remained humble and continued seeking knowledge throughout their lives. They understood that no matter how much a person learns, there is always more to discover.
Knowledge should also lead to action. Learning without implementation provides limited benefit. The purpose of acquiring knowledge is not merely to accumulate information but to improve one’s worship, character, and contribution to society.
Parents play an important role in cultivating a love for learning. Encouraging children to read, ask questions, and seek understanding can help develop habits that benefit them for a lifetime.
A community that values knowledge becomes stronger, wiser, and better prepared to face challenges. Conversely, a community that neglects learning risks falling behind and becoming vulnerable to confusion and misinformation.
The pursuit of knowledge is not a task with a finish line. It is a journey that continues from childhood until the end of life.
May Allah increase us in beneficial knowledge, grant us wisdom, and help us act upon what we learn. Ameen.
