SOCIAL MEDIA: A BLESSING OR A TEST FOR MUSLIMS?
Social media has become a major part of modern life. Millions of people spend hours each day scrolling through posts, watching videos, sharing opinions, and consuming information. While these platforms offer many benefits, they also present serious challenges for Muslims seeking to live according to Islamic values.
Technology itself is neither good nor bad. What matters is how it is used. Social media can be a powerful tool for spreading beneficial knowledge, maintaining family ties, promoting good causes, and sharing reminders that bring people closer to Allah.
At the same time, it can also become a source of distraction, gossip, misinformation, envy, and wasted time. A few minutes of scrolling can easily turn into hours that could have been spent on worship, learning, family responsibilities, or productive work.
One of the greatest dangers of social media is the ease with which people can speak without thinking. A comment written in seconds can hurt others, damage reputations, or spread false information to thousands of people. Islam places great emphasis on guarding the tongue, and this responsibility extends to what we type online.
Muslims should also be cautious about sharing information without verification. False news spreads rapidly on social media, and many people unknowingly become part of the problem by forwarding messages without checking their authenticity. The Qur’an instructs believers to verify information before acting upon it or spreading it further.
Another challenge is comparison. Social media often presents a carefully edited version of people’s lives. Constant exposure to images of success, wealth, and luxury can lead to dissatisfaction and envy. A believer should remember that true success is not measured by followers, likes, popularity, or material possessions, but by faith and obedience to Allah.
Privacy is another important issue. Not every moment of life needs to be shared publicly. Islam encourages modesty and discourages unnecessary self-promotion. Before posting, Muslims should ask themselves whether the content is beneficial, truthful, and pleasing to Allah.
Despite these challenges, social media can be used for tremendous good. Many people have learned about Islam, discovered beneficial knowledge, and found inspiration through positive online content. When used wisely, these platforms can become tools for da’wah and personal growth.
A useful question every Muslim should ask before posting is: “Would I be comfortable seeing this deed on the Day of Judgment?” If the answer is no, it may be better left unpublished.
Social media is one of the defining tests of our time. Like any test, success depends on discipline, sincerity, and consciousness of Allah.
May Allah guide us to use technology in ways that benefit us, protect us from its harms, and make our online presence a source of reward rather than regret. Ameen.
