MUHARRAM: THE SACRED MONTH THAT BEGINS THE ISLAMIC YEAR
With the arrival of a new Islamic year comes the arrival of Muharram, one of the most honored months in the Islamic calendar. While many people focus on the change of the year itself, Muharram deserves special attention because of its unique status and virtues in Islam.
Allah says in the Qur’an that there are twelve months in a year, and among them are four sacred months. Muharram is one of these sacred months. During these months, believers are encouraged to increase their obedience to Allah and avoid all forms of wrongdoing.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) referred to Muharram as “the Month of Allah,” a distinction not given to any other month. This special description highlights the importance and sanctity of Muharram in the life of a Muslim.
One of the greatest acts of worship during Muharram is voluntary fasting. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in the month of Muharram. This provides Muslims with an excellent opportunity to continue the spiritual momentum built during Ramadan and the blessed days of Dhul-Hijjah.
Within Muharram lies the Day of Ashura, the tenth day of the month. It is a day filled with historical and spiritual significance. It commemorates the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh and his army. In gratitude to Allah, Prophet Musa fasted on that day, and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged Muslims to do the same.
The reward for fasting on Ashura is immense. The Prophet (peace be upon him) informed the believers that fasting on this day expiates the sins of the previous year. To distinguish the Muslim practice from that of other communities, scholars recommend fasting either the ninth and tenth days or the tenth and eleventh days of Muharram.
Muharram is not merely a month to remember historical events. It is a month to renew one’s faith, strengthen one’s connection with Allah, and begin the Islamic year with sincere worship. It serves as a reminder that every new year should start with gratitude, repentance, and a commitment to righteousness.
As Muslims enter this blessed month, they should strive to increase their prayers, recitation of the Qur’an, charity, remembrance of Allah, and acts of kindness. The way a believer begins the year can set the tone for the months that follow.
May Allah make Muharram a month of spiritual growth, forgiveness, and abundant blessings for the entire Ummah. Ameen.
