THE MEANING OF ISLAM
Islam is a word rich in depth, beauty, and purpose. It is derived from the Arabic root “SALAMA” which conveys meanings such as peace, purity, submission, and obedience. In its religious sense, Islam means **complete submission to the will of Allah and obedience to His divine law
Everything in existence except human beings operates in total submission to Allah’s command. The sun rises, the oceans flow, the winds move, and the stars remain in their precise orbits, all according to laws set by the Creator. They do not deviate, nor do they possess a choice. In this sense, they exist in a natural state of Islam.
Human beings, however, have been honoured with intelligence, free will, and the ability to choose. This unique gift places upon man a responsibility: to willingly submit to Allah. When a person chooses to align their life with the guidance of their Creator, they become a Muslim one who submits. This conscious submission is not a burden, but a path to true peace, balance, and harmony in both this life and the next.
Islam is not a new religion that began at a specific point in history. Rather, it is the original message of all the Prophets, dating back to the time of Prophet Adam (peace be upon him). This same message was consistently conveyed by noble Messengers such as Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), Prophet Musa (Moses), Prophet Isa (Jesus), and was ultimately perfected and completed through the final Messenger, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
At its core, Islam calls humanity to recognize and worship Allah alone the One and Only Eternal God. Allah is the Creator of the universe, the Sustainer of all that exists, the Most Compassionate, and the Most Merciful. It is important to note that the word “Allah” is simply the Arabic term for God, and it is also used by Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians.
Submission to Allah is the greatest protection for the human heart. It brings clarity in confusion, stability in uncertainty, and tranquility in a restless world. Through Islam, a believer finds purpose, direction, and a deep connection with their Creator.
