RAMADAN DAY 10: GATES OF HEAVEN ARE OPENED

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of Heaven are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.”
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

This powerful hadith describes the spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan.

The opening of the gates of Heaven signifies that the doors of mercy, forgiveness, and acceptance are widely accessible. Opportunities for reward are multiplied. Good deeds carry greater weight. Supplications rise more readily.

The closing of the gates of Hell reflects Allah’s immense mercy during this month. It signals that the path to destruction is restricted for those who sincerely seek Him. Ramadan is not designed for punishment — it is designed for transformation.

And the chaining of the devils indicates that the external forces of temptation are restrained. This does not mean a person cannot sin, but it means the spiritual environment is purified. The battlefield becomes clearer. If we fall short, we must look inward — at our habits, our nafs, our choices.

Ramadan removes excuses.

If the gates of Jannah are open, why hesitate in repentance?
If the gates of Hell are closed, why cling to sin?
If the devils are chained, what holds us back from obedience?

This hadith should not only comfort us  it should motivate us.

Open gates mean urgency. It means this is not an ordinary month. The window of opportunity is limited. Ramadan passes quickly, but its rewards can be eternal.

Increase your du‘a. Increase your Qur’an recitation. Increase your charity. Even small deeds done consistently in this month can be the reason a gate of Paradise is opened for you on the Day of Judgment.

Do not let these open gates go unused.

May Allah allow us to enter through the gates of mercy in this world and through the gates of Jannah in the next.
