THE SUNNAHS OF FRIDAY (JUMU‘AH)

Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. On it, Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, on it he was expelled from it, and the Hour will not occur except on a Friday.”

Friday is a day of immense virtue  a weekly Eid for the believers. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us several Sunnahs that bring spiritual reward and purification on this blessed day.

1. Perform Ghusl (ritual bath), wear your best clothes, and apply fragrance.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Bathing on Friday is obligatory upon everyone who has reached puberty.” He also encouraged wearing clean, fine clothes and using perfume or musk before attending Jumu‘ah.

2. Go early to the Masjid.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When it is Friday, angels stand at every door of the masjid recording the people in the order of their arrival. When the Imam sits on the pulpit, they close their scrolls and listen to the reminder.”

3. Sit with good manners and pray voluntary prayers.
It is from the etiquettes of Jumu‘ah not to separate people who are already seated and to engage in voluntary prayers (nafl) until the Imam begins the khutbah. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever bathes on Friday, purifies himself, applies oil or perfume, goes early to the masjid, does not separate two people, prays what Allah has written for him, and listens attentively to the khutbah his sins between that Friday and the previous one will be forgiven.”

4. Pray two rak‘ahs upon entering the Masjid, even if the khutbah has started.
Sulaik (رضي الله عنه) came to the masjid while the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon. The Prophet said to him: “O Sulaik, stand and pray two rak‘ahs, and make them brief.”

5. Send abundant blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ).
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Among the best of your days is Friday, so send many blessings upon me on that day, for your blessings are presented to me.”

6. Increase in du‘ā (supplication).
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “There is an hour on Friday during which no Muslim asks Allah for something good except that He grants it to him.” He described it as a brief but blessed moment.

7. Recite Surah Al-Kahf.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will be illuminated with light between that Friday and the next.” (Authenticated by Al-Albani, reported by Al-Hakim)

Friday is not just another day  it is a spiritual gift and an opportunity to renew our connection with Allah. Embracing its Sunnahs brings light to our week, forgiveness to our hearts, and blessings to our lives.
