OYO STATE REAFFIRMS STUDENTS’ RIGHT TO WEAR HIJAB: MURIC HAILS DECISION

The Oyo State Chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) celebrates a significant milestone in safeguarding the rights of Muslim female students across the state.

This follows reports from concerned parents, led by Mallam Ayanrinde Daud, about certain missionary public schools refusing admission to female students wearing the hijab. MURIC swiftly intervened.

State Secretary Ambassador Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade personally accompanied the affected parents and students to meet with the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nurain Adeniran. Dr. Adeniran assured them the matter would be resolved and requested one week to provide feedback.

Within two days, Dr. Adeniran confirmed that:

  • All students in public schools across Oyo State are now allowed to wear the hijab as part of their official school uniform.

  • The directive was jointly issued by the SUBEB Chairman and the Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and endorsed by the Honourable Commissioner for Education.

  • The state government reaffirmed that no public school may discriminate against any student based on religious attire or personal rights.

Students previously denied entry for wearing the hijab are therefore advised to return to their schools immediately to resume academic activities.

This development marks a historic victory for justice, equality, and the protection of fundamental human rights.

MURIC, Oyo State Chapter, commends the Oyo State Government, SUBEB, TESCOM, and the Ministry of Education for their prompt and decisive action in upholding the rights of all students.
